For what their charging for a Hampton Inn, I booked the Westin in Stamford, CT. 35 minute train ride isn't that bad. The hotel is very close to the station, and Westins are my favorite...the "heavenly beds" are to die for...plus $109/night and I get points...can't go wrong.
But I NEVER have trouble finding a room in NYC during the winter months...

Well, my birthday is on the 2nd and I know a lot of people will be in town for the parade being held in my honor. :)
Seriously, Thanksgiving through New Years is always a heavy tourist time, and I think they're lighting the tree on Nov. 29th.
The only place I could get reservations for under $300 a night was at the Holiday Inn by Central Park. I've never stayed there before, but as long as it has a bed and a bathroom, I'll be happy.
Getting show tickets is a lot of fun this time of year too!
