This summer the student run theater group that I am a director and a actor for wants to do a musical, and I have been put in charge of what to choose. Here are some of my choices:
- Footloose
- Little shop Of Horrors
- Evita
- light in the piazza
- Chicago
- Sweet Charity
- Gypsy
Our cast will most likely be pretty small, and we're on a pretty tight budget, so I would like peoples opinions on what I should choose, or any other shows that i could do.
Thanks!

"Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"

What are the ages of most of the cast? I don't think Piazza is even an option, legally, but Footloose might be fun, if you have strong dancers. Evita is very serious and vocally demanding, and Gypsy is pretty intense. Sweet Charity may be fun (probably cheap and easy costumes, too...remember, Charity never once changed her dress), but it all depends on your level of talent, ages, etc.
Out of that list, if R&H will provide the rights (unlikely), I'd go after The Light in the Piazza.
Also, Little Shop tends to be higher budget with all the puppet issues.
Other shows you could consider:
Godspell
Assassins
Company
The Fantasticks
Into the Woods
I did little shop a few years back and had a blast, but I agree with the puppet/budget issue. How about "Youre a good man Charlie brown"?

If you really like dancing and want to have fun with a show I think you should go with Footloose
Only do Footloose if you don't care how terrible the book of your show is.
C'mon Kitz, the book for Footloose isnt that bad really

Light in the Piazza DEFINETLY isn't an option. I second You're a Good Man Charlie Brown or Assassins. Maybe Jekyll and Hyde?
Ive never seen J&H, but I personally would jump at the chance to do it just because of the story
I've been in Footloose twice and have been so scarred by the sheer horridness of it that I can't even listen to the soundtrack anymore.
It does not hold up well to scrutiny. This show really is like slow torture--how it EVER made it to Broadway is beyond me. I've seen better scripts come from eighth graders.
PS--J&H is another show whose book does not stand up to scrutiny.

there is no chance of you doing piazza, sorry.
evita has a pretty big cast, too. think of all the crowd scenes in buenos aires.
if you have a girl-heavy group (which you probably do) chicago would work. also, minimal scenery can be used.
Acording to this site Piazza right are available, but they might just be avalible to professional not amature

at the bottom of that page:
"THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is currently restricted, however if your organization would like to be notified when the rights will be available please contact us."
it's not available at all yet.
Kitz- Wow! Footloose twice eh? I would kill to have been able to do it twice. I have seen some really good versions of it and I love the soundtrack. ok so its a little bubblegummy, I dont know about you, but sometimes I need that
I've also been in Footloose twice and they were really two of my best theatre experiences. This show is soooooooo much fun to do with high school kids because you can relate to every character in the show---and it doesn't matter that the book is not perfect---the parents and the kids have a ton of fun with it. Some songs in particular such as "Let's Hear it For the Boy", "Mama Says", "Heaven Helps the Man" and obviously "Footloose" can be complete show stoppers. Both times I was in the show, we performed it as in present day, so each cast member brought their own costumes for the most part. There are also quite a number of named "parts" in the show, and many of ren's friends or chuck's friends can be played by girls, if you're short on male talent. Seriously a show that I recommend everyone perform in at some point in their lives.
I was in "your a good man charlie brown" is a good one we did that one in 8th grade we had enough people...i was snoopy
I requested a licence to do footloose, but I was wondering if anyone has been in the goodbye girl, because we have the right cast for it, but don't know if it's any good.

I'd go with Little Shop of Horrors!
It's will be good for a small cast and budget wise I wouldn't think it would be too hard. The only problem is the plant! I'm not sure how you get one like that. But you could get creative by making one or even getting the actor who does his voice to have some type of costume.
Anyways, I think that's a GREAT option for you!
NICELY SAID WAY_TO_SPEND_THE_DAY!! ps. ive done the same thing, and i totally agree,hmm...its like we know eachother or something, maybe we were even in the same show!
