Redhot, you can never be completely happy unless you find an outlet for the artist inside of you. If your passion is to be on stage, that's where you need to be. Even if you don't make it at least you will never have regrets about not trying. I would advise that you keep your day job and figure out a way to get to auditions by arranging time off or being "sick" when you need to. Once you are offered a part, take the chance and give up the full time job. It will be difficult but, in the long run, it may be more difficult for you to feel you had talent that went unused.
I would also advise that prior to doing anything, you talk it over with your partner, consider all the difficulties that will come up and have some basic plan to deal with them. Don't just go for it without making an informed and well thought out decision.
Nina - what you say makes a lot of sense and sounds like good advice even for a younger person getting into the biz - as for me - I had a great career for many years and was on a nice roll with it...but I could never get it to that next level. I've never looked my age and yet in non-eq situations I always played older. Now I'm 42, equity, and been out of the loop just long enough to wonder if I can ever get back in!LOL...those last couple years of my auditions, all the casting agents would listen to me sing and say things like: "I love your voice but have no idea how to use you, because you don't look old enough for the character role..." I've lost a lot of hair since then and have a few more crows feet - maybe if I try again, people might take me serious this time!...I remain Positive about it all...I really HAVE to.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!"

Ah...the pervervial "GAP" is now a canyon!! I know it well!

Pumpkin, it's never too late to start again. You may find that as a mature adult, you are taken more seriously. One last word of wisdom then I'm done. If you try again and never make it to that next level you were trying to reach, be thankful that you got further than most people do in this business. That alone is an accomplishment that should make you proud. Not everyone can be a star but, after it's all said and done, it's the performing that's important. That's what feeds the artistic soul.
Redhot is a cutie!!! JoeyJoe is a lucky lucky man!
"Noah, someday we'll talk again. But there's things we'll never say. That sorrow deep inside you. It inside me, too. And it never go away. You be okay. You'll learn how to lose things..."
Matt - joeyjoe is pretty darned cute himself!...we're both very lucky to have each other for love and support.. I think I posed this question to the board because I knew there had to be others out there in similar situations or who had faced this kind of thing in their lives. I'm comforted to know that we have the bond of that NEED to perform - as Nina just said - its not about being a star (I never wanted that, anyway) its about being able to do what you love - and I love to perform.

OK here is stuff a lot of my friends who have difficulty being hired being of "a certain age". One started decorating/ landscape gardening as a side line and while he still auditions & would take a gig if offered he no longer bugs his agent cos he is too busy w his decorating gig & no he has no specific training - just his actor's (OK GAY actor's) sensibilities. Started out doing stuff for friends & word o mouth took over. Also met his spousal equivalant this way too. Nother friend started going back after a lingering health problem but NOW he only does voice wotk. ( he did a lot of radio work b4). He also did property management- again no specific training other than being on the board of his co op. Finally another friend couldn't get hired for love nor money he did leave the industry & went into...headhunting! It can be a lot of slogging @ first but u get a % of the hiring salary so u can clear 10- 25 k with a successfull recruitment. He got hired on spec & $ was tight till the first commision but he now does it free lance in a specific field & can make 50-60 K a year! Don't give up yr day job yet but get creative w what other avenues u might be able to traverse! Good luck hon!
Big Red: Boy does this ring true. Try being 42, not quite looking my age(thank God), but short and stocky. Way to old for Rent, or American Idol, even though people say how good my voice is and "YOU should be on Idol, you're as good as they are..."
Since there aren't that many roles out there either in my age range or certainly my height, what's a guy to do? [And if one more person calls me Nathan, as in Nathan Lane, I shall be moved to murder them]
I would recommend maybe writing a show for yourself, or getting someone to write with you. If anything it will stir the creative juices, and hell, you could even write the next Avenue Q or Tick, Tick, Boom. I have a great outlet leading a Modern Music Worship service at my church, subbing at other churches, weddings, etc. I ran my own theater for a while (made me broke, but happy). Whatever you do, KEEP doing it, find a way to sing or act somewhere, even if it's for family and friends. I wish I could come out to see your cabaret act...I have toyed with that idea as well, but it is a daunting task...My hat's off to you.
AND, you have someone in your life to share it all with, to support you...your soft place to fall (thanks Dr. Phil), that's a double blessing.
I had hit the same crossroads here in Chicago. I guess it boils down to heart and priorities. My theatre experiences since moving to Chicago had all been bad and not enough to pay the rent, so when the savings ran out, I started temping and landed a job I really like. Though I would love to perform again, I would much rather do so in a more positive atmosphere than what I experienced and keep it fun than struggle to live in a nasty apartment and work with horrible people just for the sake of being an actor. I weighed the pros and cons since moving to Chicago and for the last two years, I've been much happier in the audience than the one year I spent on stage. And there's NOTHING wrong with that! I can always go back to acting in some form, but I might not always get another job like this. It took seven months to find a full time job. I'm too old to go through that again.
But that's me.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
joeyjoe - bite your tongue!...showgirls indeed. If I ever DO write a show, its either gonna be that idea I spoke of a while back (Stairway to Heaven) or another treatment of the Van Gogh story (only because so many people say that I look like his self-portraits)...but for now, I shall do this one man thingy and see if anyone likes anything about it...and take it from there! Thanks, everyone for all the kind advice and great personal stories - it all helps in ways I can't begin to describe! Now I must go and dry off from this monsoon we are having - OY...

RedHot - I, too, am 42. I followed a different path. Went to college, got the degree, got the good job, the house in the 'burbs with the wife and kids. DIDN'T persue acting/singing professionally. I've always wondered "what if". I do community shows occasionally, some singing here and there, but nothing professionally. If you're going through a dry spell, at least take comfort in the fact that you went for it! You've got years of performing memories behind you, and probably many more in front of you as well. How envious I am!
"Singing is the lowest form of communication" - Homer
Dano - that was a very nice thought - I'm sure you find lots of joy in the community theatre venue...and yes I have lots of great memories to keep me going - but I'm pretty much decided that I will once again persue this crazy business, its just the "hows, wheres and whats" that I have to figure out!

Rath - tell me that again after you see my show in November...LOL... gosh I hope people get something out of this show...I've tried hard to come up with some spiritually enlightening stuff that shows not only a bit of my personality and attitude about life, but also does it with a modicum of sophistication and by putting a new twist on some of the songs. (My musical director, Tim DiPasqua, is a pretty amazing arranger, and I'm doing one of his own songs in the show also - he's a very talented songwriter and performer (and cute, to, for all you single gay gents out there...LOL)
