"Susan Eisenhower is more than just another disappointed Republican. She is also Ike's granddaughter and a dedicated member of the party who has urged her fellow Republicans in the past to stick with the GOP. But now Eisenhower, who runs an international consulting firm, is endorsing Barack Obama. She has no plans to officially leave the Republican Party. But in Eisenhower's view, Obama is the only candidate who can build a national consensus on the issues most important to her—energy, global warming, an aging population and America's standing in the world."
Barack + GOP = ‘Obamacans’
I certainly believe that Obama can get far more of the Republican vote than Hilary. I think the party is hoping that Hilary gets the nod, because she's more "beatable" than Barack. Dyed-in-the-wool Republicans despise her. They have no strong negative feelings toward Obama.

Republicans can (and will) work up vehement hatred toward any Democrat that tries to interfere with their march to the White House.
His wide appeal (compared to Clinton) is what finally made me an Obama supporter.
I know this is off topic, but since you brought up Eisenhower, I thought I'd share this photo.
It was taken at Sam Rayburn's funeral in my hometown. Eisenhower is next to Kennedy.
no Austin, LBJ is next to Kennedy, Eisenhower is next to LBJ.....
heh.
My mom has been a Republican her whole life and she says the only candidate she supports is Obama. I've always been the liberal black sheep in a family that listens to Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson, so it was really shocking to hear that from her.

Only the Republicans are going to have to chose the traditional "lesser of two evils."
