Posted: 11/14/04 at 6:20pmTGIF, legally, concession speeches have nothing to do with anything. I'm pretty sure Ohio has to certify its vote in order to tell its Electoral College representatives who to vote for. Or something. Gah, this whole process is so confusing.

From MSNBC:
The AP reports that by yesterday, 11 of Ohio’s 88 counties had completed vetting the provisionals and that ten of the districts have accepted the validity of more than 90 percent of them. One - Belmont County (along the West Virginia border) - has tossed 42%, and nearing the halfway mark in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), the election board there has accepted about two-thirds.

The Concession Call is all for tradition and show and ceremony.
It doesn't affect the outcome of anything.
If a candidate conceded to the other, but got 270+ electoral votes, he is still the President-elect.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

"certify"?
I would use the word "verify".
Yes, I know that there is the potential for things to turn around, but it's really a longshot. If Ohio changes it's statement, I will be amazed.

"Certify" is the "official" word. Once the vote is certified, the state can destroy the paper vote and erase the machines. That is why any request for a recount has to be filed BEFORE the vote is "certified".
I believe the intent is not to overturn the election but to reveal or confirm excessive problems in the electoral system so that they will not be ignored but will have to dealt with before the next elections. Of course if outright fraud is proven, then there is a whole 'nuther can of worms, both with this election and upcoming ones. Not to mention Senate, Congressional, State, and Local elections.

jacob--HOW MANY TIMES MUST I SAY THIS?
That speech is not legally binding. It doesn't mean SH!T. If Kerry wins--he is the next President!
Let the games begin!! It's time THIS country demand a fair election and its results. SO GLAD that the Kerry camp is stepping in. Let's pray for a very Merry Christmas and an even happier New Year!
I AM NOT GIVING UP HOPE UNTIL ALL THE VOTES ARE COUNTED!!!!

Posted: 12/5/04 at 3:28amUnfortuneatly, the voting machines will give the same results the second time around. With no paper trail, how can you have a recount? What's there to re-count?

That is exactly why this election should be thrown out. We should practice what we preach and hold a new election. However, we should set a new example for the Ukraine and actually fix the election problems before doing so.
When 40 million votes were placed on Bush-supported-Diebold machines, I think there is plenty of room to question the validity of those votes.
Let's just hope that at the least, a recount produces a tally of all votes in the state. There is a chance that Kerry will prove to be the winner.
