When do we use this stuff?!

Better still, quit school, go on welfare, commit a crime, go to prison and get pregnant.

OK - I tried to be polite and answer the question asked - but if all this REALLY is going to be is an endless run of posts amounting to 'school sucks', then perhaps it ought to be taken to the School thread - or somewhere where someone might actually care to hear the inanity.

Even better still:

Quit school, go on welfare, commit a crime, go to prison, get pregnant and then start using drugs. Then send your kids to school with all the problems they've inherited from you and they can be a pain th the butt to their teachers.

I dont think I have ever had the need to use logarithims, discuss the Pythagorean Theorum or engage in nuclear fission. What I can do is LEARN. That is something that I will be doing until I take my last breath. To have the ability to learn something new gives quality to my life. Because my brain has been trained to learn via what I learned in school years ago, my life has quality and I am alive.

Yenta - that was exactly my point - thanks for illustrating it with real-life experience - but the point got drowned out by the incessant whine of the perturbed unfortunates who are having this awful existence thrust upon them.

Well said DG......now they might have to actually look up the words you posted in the dictionary!

I have a great idea! Let's all go back to the days when you learned the three Rs, then got apprenticed at age 11! No more silly knowledge that doesn't prepare you for a profession.

Grr.

Look, school prepares you to be a citizen of the world. Tell me, how can you make judgments about things like bioethics when you don't even have a clue about the biology behind it? How can you be a juror in a modern day murder or rape case if you don't understand DNA? How can you judge for yourself the validity of all the studies reported on the news if you don't have a basic grasp of statistics? If nothing else, the subjects that don't come to you naturally will teach you how to think in a different way than you normally do, and nothing is better for your cognition in general.

Besides, you'd be surprised when you actually might put some of the obscure things you've learned to use one day.

I really do hate to appear cranky about this, but honestly! To be viewing the state of our society and the world in general, and then see a group of - by their own posted pictures - relatively affluent priveledged youth whine and grouse like this is somewhat beyond the pale.

And we wonder why Paris Hilton is so popular?

No, I'm not done ranting.

Since when is everything about pure utility? What kind of cold shallow existence are you aspiring to? This is exactly the kind of thinking that gets music and arts programs cut in schools to make more room for test drilling. They're not "useful". Most of the kids aren't going to be musicians or actors or artists, so what's the use of having those programs at all? Better to prepare all the young 'uns for fun careers as investment bankers.

It's not always what one learns. But how one learns. And how one applies what's learned. Critical thinking skills are important. Problem solving skills will ALWAYS be necessary. One applies all of these skills whether confronted by computing quadratic equations (basic formula skills) or proofs (logic skills).

What do you do with a B.A. in Theater?

I would not trade that for anything. (And, I met a hot woman in the process!)

Eek... I'm sorry to get everyone riled up! I was just frustrated on a test I'm having tomorrow in bio that I'm still worried I'm going to fail after studying for over an hour for.

Drama - honestly, please don't take it personally. I think you're just seeing the frustration of some people bubbling over. NOT that there's no reason for the frustration, but you don't need to internalize the response - we've all freaked out about the very thing you are at some point, I'm sure.

But SERIOUSLY look through some of these comments later - AFTER you've passed your test re: When do we use this stuff?!

actually I think it's more

It's not always what one learns. But THAT one learns.

I kinda understand everyone's frustrations. My generation is called the "entitlement" generation for a reason. I'd be the first to admit we're a bunch of spoiled brats who think the world is all ours.

Drama, at least you had the guts to venture back in.

I cannot agree more with the sentiments already stated by Plum, Brdlwry, Yenta, DG . . .

It is just not the information that is important, it is the process of learning and how you train your brain (your most valuable tool)that matters. You need to find ways to learn, adapt, process and adjust new info. That is more important that the actual info itself.

If you think school is tough, just wait until real life is thrown at you. The more you exercise and train your brain, the better you will be able to handle the mental and emotional challenges of life.

I really don't understand how some students can just HATE school with such fervor as they do. Life AFTER school is much more difficult. There aren't any more days off, there isn't anymore summer break, there aren't anymore "classes" with your friends (unless you're stuck in the same tiny cubicle as them). I think that the "boring knowledge" is only a small price to pay for the luxury of school.

I like school, I'm generally thankful for it. Frankly what else would I be doing if I weren't in school — causing more public mayhem; working some crappy, unskilled, boring, job; or like Dolly mentioned reaping off of government funding? On the other hand school is truly just ridiculous at times, and this is not based on the workload or the seemingly extraneous information I'm supposed to know. (Although excruciating, it is bearable, and I did signed up for it...) The administration, the rules, the pointless demerits that they hand out because no one actually does anything wrong (at my school, at least)...is what I loathe.
