When giving a monolouge....

Should you dress how your character would? Or do you reley completly on your voice and body to paint the character in your audience's mind?

Agreed, never dress like your character unless asked to. The monologue won't be anything special if you can't act it correctly, even if you look like the character.

If you think your character would wear pants, then wear nice dress pants. If you think your character would wear a skirt, then wear a nice skirt. But if your character would be wearing fishnets or a wifebeater, don't.

I was going to ask this myself. I'm doing a Shakespearean monologue next week (I'm doing Portia from Julius Caesar Act 2 scene 1) and have been struggling with what to wear. I've considered skirt, but feel that limits my movement. But pants just don't seem very Shakespeare...

I would do only slight things like, if you're playing a MUCH younger character than you, wear a color such as a bright pink or yellow or white to make you appear younger, wear your hair differently, wear a skirt, etc. Older, wear pants or a straight skirt, etc. That's only for girls, tho (the skirts part)

if you want to show castability with age, just try tiny things like that, but never wear a costume.
some things are meant to be...
