Well, I, for one, can't agree with your original post more! I didn't see it as BS or feel good crap.
I don't know if I want to go to the next level of internet communication, though. Of the 4 boards I peruse, the two Broadway ones are where I often find the worst behaviour.
I don't know if I want to see the faces o hear the voices that go along with the comments.

lazy - first of all, I don't quite get the 'way too nice' distinction - I wasn't aware there was such a thing. And you can classify that as 'existential, feel good bs' if you like (and you obviously do.)
I have NO problem with personal expression - and I'm WAY too long in the tooth to think that the experience of life leads one to rainbows and flowers exploding out of your ass all the time. But I DO have a problem with the overt expression of negativity that directly impacts other human beings - without any responsibility being taken by or afforded to the originating party.
Have all the hate, venom, bile and crap you want - and spill it into a public arena for all to choke on, trip over, whatever - but have the F*CKING balls to put your name and face to it. Otherwise, it just gets added to the accumulating pile of SH*T that holds us back, and keeps us from being who we could be.

Completely agree with you on that one. Still. There are some of us...ok me, that hasn't decided to be all I can be and if I want to call someone's post BS, this is the place to do it. I'd rather have people who say "this is bs" than "yes, I'll pray for your mother's neighbor's dog."

Cool, thanks for the permission to tell you, Lazy, to shut the f**k up.

Posted: 11/26/06 at 11:43pmlazy - I have NO problem with either sentiment - I just want there to be accountability for each. Stand behind what you think and feel - don't hide behind a wall. If you're not willing to take responsibility for it, then it shouldn't be said.

First of all, I never did like drag queens.
Second, Do you think someone like FindingNamo, whom I respect, is taking any kind of resposibility for outing chanti or dakin? Even someone as intelligent as Namo uses anonimity to exact revenge on someone he thinks deserves it.

Lazy - wow - that's quite a tie-in to a fellow poster. And, for what it's worth, Namo is one of the VERY few around here I take seriously, because of his demonstrated awareness and capability.
But honestly, I'm bothered by the anonymity concerning even him - distinctions aren't the point, the set-up is.

Exactly! That's why I used him as an example. An act like that I can expect from someone vile like myself or Diva, not Namo.

". . . the difference between sock puppets and homophobic moderators."
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that sends me over the edge - this self-aware, I know something you should by now attitude. And it references so much of the crap that has gone on around here.
You can discuss what you will, but as long as you continue to make your pronouncements from behind your mask of smugness, I will continue to take the comments with the ton of salt they deserve - if at all.

Well, I joined up here a while ago, only to return quite recently, so I'm not sure if what I have to say really would count for anything...but oh well, here it goes:
"Have all the hate, venom, bile and crap you want - and spill it into a public arena for all to choke on, trip over, whatever - but have the F*CKING balls to put your name and face to it. Otherwise, it just gets added to the accumulating pile of SH*T that holds us back, and keeps us from being who we could be."
I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, I've had the displeasure on being at the receiving end of some people's vile but I sort of walk away from it. Recently, I made a mistake on another board (I pretty much targeted a (non-hateful) comment to the wrong user, and thus this started a flame war of sorts.) Did I get angry at the people talking crap about my mistake? Sure did. Did I have the courage to go back and say "I ****ed up"? You betcha.
I've learned that one bad day on a forum could just blow your reputation to smithereens...so I try to be cautious. It doesn't always work, but I do try.

P.Marv - your story brings up a point that is pretty much directly tied into my thread - why are the attitudes and associations on a message board taken serparately from the normal human interactions that we are used to?
My point was, and still is, until the parameters that we use to monitor our interactions are implemented in cyberspace, this type of communication is profoundly limited, and can only go so far to enact REAL human connection.

DG and others...
It's not technology that will move forums like these to the next level. It will be human beings' ability to evolve.
In EVERYONE'S defense (how often do any of us get to defend EVERYONE on the BWW Board?!), the internet and its many devices are still relatively new. We have not truly learned how to master the technology, so we have let it master us.
This board--and others--are still in transient states. We are all part of the process, part of the experiment. Personally, I find it fascinating. I see the best and worst of humankind on this board. The most juvenile and the most compassionate.
But it doesn't--and shouldn't--take the place of REAL interaction with REAL people. And THAT is what every civilization has struggled with since the beginning of time.

We're absolutely on the same page there, MissP.
I do have to disagree, though, in that I DO think advancements in technology can help the process along. Kind of in line with your thinking, humans have always dragged their feet when it comes to change or advancement. I just think that removing some of the availability for them to revert to the base tendencies couldn't hurt.

I still think people need to evolve at a faster rate, DG!!! I ain't gonna be alive that much longer!

That's why I do enjoying talking with real people... because I do feel as though my sometimes snarky behavior may not always be taken with a grain of salt on the internet (ie forums). Most of the time people dimiss it for being "bitchy" or just don't get it at all. In a way, that's why I've tried avoiding arguments here and elsewhere. It's a waste of time to get into a spew fest with someone who you're more than likely never going to meet.
I've only met one person from here and that's just by chance, but I doubt I'll ever run into anyone else here. Or from any of the other forums I go to.
Oh well, that's all I got to say.

MissP - that very thought is at the core of why I get so angry and frustrated with the society I have to live in as a gay man. While everyone else is having this lovely philosophical discussion about attitudes, rights, etc., MY CLOCK IS TICKING!
And P.Marv - I tend to view all input as an opportunity to learn and/or grow - and this venue is just one of those possibilities. While I understand what you're saying, I still get frustrated at the abuse of availability.
