The word is "the." And the answer is not George W. Bush. That's all you need to know, given that the Log Cabinettes were shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you to hear that their president would support a constitutional amendment designed to exclude a group from a civil right. Those poor dears, to never ever have anticipated such an alarming development.

Why don't you Log Cabin boys write in Andrew Sullivan? He's in your .... what's the word again? ... camp. He's also stamping his Frye boot in outrage, stunned his butch Bush is in reality such a finger-wagging "Nanny." (His words, not mine; in Time.) Well, many a man has faced such disillusionment -- when an advertised Top turns out to be a B.O.B., Big Ol' Bottom.

Oftentimes folks just don't want to be typecast...politicians or just the ordinary Jane/Joe on the street.

I read somewhere (The Times, I suppose) where Bush has not actually used the A word (Amendment). Auggie, do you know if that's true?

I still hold that all gays and lesbians and hetereosexual partnered individuals should just stop spending money for several days. Attention will be paid.

It still astounds me how a person can be gay and republican when the republican party, as a general rule, is VERY antigay. It's like sitting you ass on a hot fire, getting burned, and leavingh it there... then acting surprised,s hocked, and appalled when you get a serious burn!

I'm not gay, but I believe in gay rights...and I lean toward being a Republican. (not 100%, but mostly there) I do know a few other homosexuals that are Republicans also. (of course they believe in gay marriage, but they mostly have Republican beliefs)

As I know, there are really 4 main parties/beliefs:
1. Liberal Democrats
2. Conservative Democrats
3. Liberal Republicans
4. Conservative Republicans.

The line is a bit hard to draw with all these different beliefs going around.

Hmm...*plots to revolutionize the Republican Party when she runs for president later*

There are more gay Republicans that anyone cares to admit. Even the Democrats.

And, there are more anti-Gays in the Democratic Party than anyone cares to admit.

Both are examples of what what's known as the silent majority.

If truth be told it might surprise many a folk to realize that the opposite of the perception is true.

You can be Republican when it comes to foreign policy, economics, etc. and be liberal about gay rights and abortion or whatever combination. Lieberman was very conservative about gay rights.

My answer to the question: ANY of the remaining Democrats would be better for gay rights than leaving Dubya in there. I think all 4 are very supportive--despite having to make Clintonesque compromises.

Bulldog, yes, you're right. Homophobia is a basic human characteristic, one that knows no era, party or demographic. I'm cynical, and don't think any revolution will ever fully remove it. In a hip Manhattan school where several kids have two dads and two moms -- still, still, the worst, most wounding, bruising thing a boy be called is "gay." But it's everywhere, from cool Bill Maher calling "Finding Nemo" a movie about a "lesbian fish," to two self-defining butch men dissing queenie behavior.

So for my vote, rights -- housing, partner benefits, anti-bias crime protection -- are what I want. Let America become safer and more just first; marriage -- in a society where half of all couples split anyway -- can wait.

I agree with you Auggie.

In the overall scheme of quality of life, personal safety and housing, medical coverage across the board, minimizing of racial, sexual and age discrimination, elimination of hunger in the good ole USA, employment, and establishing partner benefits are priorities, in my opinion as well.

I feel stronger about marriage rights and would put that next on the list. One of the reasons, not the main one, is that single people in relationships, gay or straight, are the most hit by the IRS and pay the bigger share of the benefits and incentives afforded to those who can claim "married." That reason alone is significant to endorse marriage.

The argument that marriage is for "procreation" doesn't hold water when any couple today, gay or straight, can have a baby through a variety of means. And its usually the less convential couples/single parents who do a better job of raising children that the male-female 2 parent household.

stupid bush quotes of the day:

"the California crunch really is the result of not enough power-generating plants and then not enough power to power the power of generating plants."

"this foreign policy stuff is a little frustrating."

"I think if you know what you believe, it makes it a lot easier to answer questions. I can't answer your question."

"we spent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease."

AND THE STUPIDEST QUOTE OF ALL:

"Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"

this is the man running our country! yes i know he's a competent individual and i should not attack him, but his polices (though its just so much fun!), but seriously, this is like watching dan quayle go to war. all we need now is for bush to fall down the stairs of Air Force One. too bad you all know that he's gonna be re-elected. i, for one, plan to be in jail for the next few years, because i am sure as hell not following that ammendment if it gets passed.

about that offensive "lets screw the gays cause they screw each other!" bill, it has 37 states backing it. 38 states make a bill an ammendment. happy new year!

A recent poll suggested that 60% of Americans do not support gay marriage. However, 60% of Americans do not support the Amendment. Let's hope that stays true.
