Which one?

I might say ARMAGEDDON but, in hindsight, it was a rather well-directed film.

I don't think Criterion has the cache that they used to have. Not because they've gone downhill, but because the studios actually release their own remastered, in-depth, special edition titles now.

Criterion used to be a leader in fancy home entertainment releases, but that was back when laser discs were the preferred format for film buffs.

They could pick and choose what they would release. Not so, anymore.

Criterion still means "special edition" to me today (although, some of their DVD releases have been pretty bare-bones).

But they don't get as many titles as they used to for "gussying up" because the studios are doing the job themselves.

So... It's not an award-worthy big deal to say "the Criterion Edition of blah-blah"...

To me, it just hopefully means it's a Special Edition of blah-blah.

Well let's see,

The 400 Blows is a waste of time and 7 Samurai is just plain stupid.
I'm kidding of course, I love Criterion!!! But seriously, why did ever bother putting out Equinox?

I like that they have a wide selection of things. I do wish they'd have more of a choice between the deluxe editions and a bare bones "movie only" edition, as I find that I don't watch the extras very often.

But there does have to be a line drawn somewhere, and I am very glad that they didn't do the Criterion edition of PEARL HARBOR.

Did anyone buy the complete Janus Library they put out for Christmas last year? God, I wanted that so badly, but $600.00?
It was a bargain considering each title sells for roughly $30.00. but still.

"Deserve?"

Well, I'm tempted to say TRAFFIC.

...or DAZED AND CONFUSED.

I am dying to see their OLIVER TWIST, though.

I still say Ken Russell's THE DEVILS should get the Criterion treatment.

I just got the Truffaut box with all 5 Antoine Doinel fims in it for my bday.
B12B - So jealous that you have Rebecca. It's out of print now. That and Wings are the only Oscar winners I don't have.

Wings and Cavalcade are the only Best Pictures that have never been released on DVD. I still have old VHS copies of both.

I didn't realize the Criterion Rebecca was out of print! They did a nice job with it (2 discs).
