Hey guys.
I know I posted about this Cabaret audition earlier but I just have a quick question:
I am having difficulty choosing between "Life of the Party" and "How did We Come to This?" from The Wild Party for my audition song.
Life of the Party is fun and upbeat and would be great for Sally in that respect, but I was thinking maybe a more emotional song such as the latter would show off my acting skills better? I'm really not sure.
Any advice would be appreciated soooo much.

thanks for your recommendation! are you saying that song because you overall like it better or because you think it would be better for cabaret audition?

I'm a freshman in college too and as much as I've always wanted to play Sally I just want to get INTO the show! I would love to be in the ensemble for Cabaret, I bet it would be a lot of fun. So I'm in the same boat as you. I also just want to make an impression so that in the future I can get decent parts.
It is def. a hard show to pick for. I'll try to think of some songs for you. What kind of voice do you have?

heyyy YaY were in the same situation! lol I'm a soprano, but I can do mezzo too :). I'm so super excited for this show! To be honest I'd rather be in the chorus I think because I LOVE to dance lol. Plus it's fosse! aahhh! hahha I posted a thread on this a few weeks ago and didnt get anything back lol

Yeah I am really an actress/singer, but I can dance though I have very little training. As much as I'd love to be in the chorus I think the smaller parts tend to have to dance more than some of the leads (Sally, Frau Shneider, Cliff, etc.) So I really don't know. You should go for a kit kat girl if you love to dance! That would be SO much fun.
Yeah anything kander & ebb (although probably not chicago because it's so overdone) is good, and if I think of anything in particular I'll let you know. But I don't want to suggest anything that would be entirely wrong for your voice and I don't know you that well, so yeah.
In any case, good luck!! Is this for a college production?

missmezzo, I would definitely go with "How Did We Come To This?". If it's a college audition, chances are they've already heard "Life of the Party" twenty thousand times. It makes for great acting, shows a vulnerable side, and it's a pretty song! Break a leg, let us know how you do!

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

Thanks so much to both of you!!!
I'm going to be a freshman this year at a school in Boston and Cabaret is the Fall musical there so it will be my first audition at College. It's student directed.
I actually feel more comfortable singing "How did We Come to This" because it's more appropriate or my voice. My only worry with it is, is it too slow or emotional for Cabaret? For Sally?
I can't tell you how much your feedback has helped me :)

Not at all too slow. Cabaret is a deeply emotional show, and Sally has so many dimensions. The character is, ultimately, a sad one, whose life is never quite fulfilled. "How Did We Come to This" should be a really great choice.

I agree. I think Sally has a lot of tragedy and vulnerability in her.
I should mention that my school is doing the original, the one without "mein herr' and "maybe this time." I don't know if that changes things at all.
thanks again, justagirl! :)

You're welcome! That shouldn't change anything..."Maybe This Time" occurs kind of when everything between Cliff and Sally is OK, so that doesn't make a difference. And "Mein Herr" won't make a difference either, but it is fun!

OK, thanks for the heads up on that. I am more familiar with the film version of Cabaret than the actual show, and I wasn't sure if the song differences for Sally made a huge difference in her character.
Now I just have to seek out the sheet music for "how did we come to this."
It's actually a much much better song for my range and my voice overall so I'm so glad you helped me ultimately choose it over LOTP :)
