re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Tiff - they use mules at the Canyon (which are actually very large) and in all the years, they've never lost anyone. Although, it can be a little weird, apparently (I've never ridden them,) when the mule leans down to munch something on the edge and it feels like you're about to get tossed off of a three thousand foot cliff!

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Nah it actually didn't smell. There's so much air around you that you aren't closed in with donkey smell so its really not bad at all.

DG is right though, it does feel a little weird when all of a sudden your donkey decides "Hey I'm going to eat that" and you're convinced you're going to fall off, although there's really no chance of that happening. The extent of my actual donkey problems was that my friend (whose donkey started off last of the four of us) decided that it wanted to pass us all and it kept trying to push ahead, which was really funny.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I've been to:
Grand Canyon
New York Skyline
Niagara Falls

Nice and short. I will definitely get to some of those places when I can travel more and school doesn't get in the way either.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I can't believe that Lake Louise and Banff didn't make the list. I think Lake Louise is the most beautiful natural site in Canada.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

How accessible are the sites in Egypt nowadays? It's on my list too, but it seems like every year they keep threatening to close down places or place more restrictions.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I went to Egypt years ago..it seems kinda scary now, with all that is transpiring over in that region.

PS: Love the Colin F quote (and love the video, too!)

Thanks. re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Did you find that the sites met your expectations or are they pretty overrated at this point? What does the Egypt Museum offer that you can't see at the sites?

India and Taj Mahal are just amazing overall.

Marrakech is hallucinatory. I was loving every second, including my visit to the hammam, where i was scrubbed to within an inch of my life.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Things from that list that I'm fortunate enough to have seen:
Grand Canyon
Colloseuum of Rome
St. Peter's Basilica
Sistine Chapel
Canals of Venice
Metropolitan Museum
Florence Cityscape
Matterhorn
NYC Skyline
Niagara Falls
Portofino

2. Which were your highlights?
Venice is the most beautiful city that I've ever seen, so that's definitely up there. The Matterhorn was also breathtaking.

3. Which were disappointments?
Er.... none of them? Well, honestly, I wasn't that thrilled by Niagara Falls, but it was an especially foggy day, so I'll attribute it to that.

4. Which wonders have you not visited that you would like to see?
I'd absolutely love to go to Egypt and see the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. Seeing Machu Picchu would also be amazing if I ever make it to Peru. On a return trip to Europe I would love to see Neuschwanstein Castle (we missed it when we were in Germany) and go to Prague.

5. What's missing on the list that you think should be added?
Portofino is absolutely gorgeous, but I was actually more wowed by the Cinque Terre in Italy.

Edit: To answer the questions.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I've been to five of the 100: Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone, Carlsbad and San Francisco (What's so great about the Bay?)

I've also been to the Royal Gorge, which I thought was fascinating.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Speaking of World Wonders...did you know that there is a group now who is creating a brand new seven wonders of the world. They figured that since 6 of the original 7 have been destroyed, why not pick some new ones! They took nominations and then had some world-renowned engineers narrow the list down. Right now people can vote on which of the finalists should become part of the new 7 wonders. The winners will be announced in 2007 (get it--2007). I still think that the Pyramids should get a pass and be included since they are the only of the orginals still around. Here is the website where you can check it out:

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Good responses, Elphaba! My travel experience is so inferior compared to your list! re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I was also really enchanted by Mont-St-Michel. I can't believe how many people aren't interested/aware of it! I also don't think that the Met - as much as I enjoy it - should be in the same league as some of the other museums listed. And Pisa shouldn't be there - it's only a wonder in the sense of wondering how an accident in architectural design and physics can become a tourist trap! LOL!

I'm be curious to see what the standards are to be considered a "wonder". The New York skyline is impressive, but how is it wonderous? At least the Vegas strip isn't on the list anymore!

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

Where's the Temple of the Emerald Buddha? That sounds enchanting! I'm going to Europe early next summer, but Asia is actually high on the priorities list.

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

The only trip on the horizon is Western Europe again next year (but now after seeing this list and all the places I haven't seen yet, I almost think I'm wasting my time treading on familiar waters!). Then I hope to hit Asia (Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Cambodia and India on the list...and maybe Japan if we can afford it) and Africa (maybe North Africa first, then work my way down). After that, I want to do South America and eastern Europe. And then the Middle East.

Too many countries, too little time and money!

re: What World Wonders Have You Wandered?

I was to Stonehenge about 3 summers ago. You were not allowed to get too close, but close enough to feel the amazing size of the structure. I was lucky enough to be there on an absolutely gorgeous, sunny, clear day. My pictures from that day look like postcards. They are amazing!
