I enjoyed The Squid and the Whale and absolutely adored Frances Ha, so I was surprised by how much I disliked Baumbach's latest. The trailers were misleading to what the conflict of the piece was actually about. Some of it felt like a Crimes and Misdemeanors rip off, especially whenever Stiller was concerned with making his documentary.
The women's roles are very underwritten and though Stiller and Driver had more to work with, I found the former to be whiny and irritating, while the later was an asshole of the highest order.
The film is made with good technique and all that, but after such a life-affirming modern classic like Frances Ha I expected better.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
