"Whiteout"--fairly good movie, HORRIBLE score

I don't know when I've seen a movie in which the background music was more intrusive--every action sequence had to be punctuated by a bongo drummer on crystal meth.

As for the movie itself, it's basically a super-episode of "CSI: Antarctica", with some clever twists, pulse-pounding moments, and ravishing scenery (it was actually shot in Canada). Since it's a Joel Silver production, though, the first scene (after the prologue and title card) consists of Kate Beckinsale arriving at an army base in Antarctica, disrobing, and taking a completely gratuitous shower.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

Worst Score award will forever belong to TRUE ROMANCE for me.

Love the script and the performances but turn it off 9 times out of 10 thanks to that incessant xylophone pounding away.

WHAT was Zimmer thinking?!

Not gonna lie, I love many Hans Zimmer scores. But then, I'm generally VERY pedestrian in my tastes. re: 'Whiteout'--fairly good movie, HORRIBLE score

Oddly enough, HANNIBAL possesses one of my absolute favorite scores, right up there with SUSPIRIA... so it's not a Zimmer thing, per se.

But in HANNIBAL Patrick Doyle wrote the beautiful opera, not Zimmer... and Hopkins wrote that haunting piano sonata himself... but Zimmer's music is quite chilling nonetheless.

Film music is my favorite music, and has been since I saw the road show of Ben-Hur, in 1959! Miklos Rozsa's score is still among the finest ever written.

John Frizzell "composed" the "music" for WHITEOUT. I was hoping for something spare and haunting (befitting the still, frozen settings) and I got a deranged Stomp concert.

I know WHITEOUT has gotten an avalanche of bad reviews. It is rather old-fashioned--a bit like a 1950s or 1960s B-movie--and has the same plot holes that plague most thrillers, but I was engaged all the way through, and Manitoba did a perfectly decent job doubling for Antarctica. Perhaps I'm just getting a lot less demanding in my moviegoing habits...
