I love NYC. I did find a thing or two to see and do.
What did you do and see?
Well, apart from nights at various theatres...
I have a very dear friend who is a New Yorker. She was my tour guide! I saw Manhattan from her point of view. It was truly a wonderful time in a wonderful town. And, it was a long way from the usual tourist fare.
What shows did you see?
History Boys, Sweeney Todd, Drowsy Chaperone
How were they??
I loved them, especially Sweeney.
Ew. I did not care for it at all. I had good company to see it with though!
I thought The History Boys was superb. I can't wait to see the film.
I didn't see it, it did not seem to be a show that would interest me.
I'm really glad I made the trip when I did because members of the original cast left the day after I saw it! Mr. Pennywise thought I was out of my mind planning a 5-day trip to NYC a week before leaving for France for a month, but I did it because I didn't think I'd be able to see The History Boys any other time. (They hadn't announced the extension when I bought the tix.) You should go, Liotte. It's practically a musical!
History Boys is more of a rumination on the worth of learning for the sake of learning. I am also looking forward to the film. Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Samuel Barnett, Dominic Cooper et al, all on one stage, made my evening. My New York friend is now in love with Dominic...
I'm sorry that you didn't care for Sweeney Todd. Of course, I love Sondheim, and this stripped-down production allowed his score to come to the fore. Michael Cerveris and his gleaming head and mad stare was a fine Sweeney and I was impressed with Patti's Mrs. Lovett.
I'm a former English teacher, and History Boys made me cry. (Hep, you understand since you saw it.)
Maybe I will see if they have rush and check it out.
It was such a tragedy that these boys were victims of style over substantive education.
Beware the sightlines in this show! The set does not allow a full view... even from the centre of the first few rows.
Yes, go, Liotte! It's not going to be around for much longer.
I think that it closes in the first week of October.
I sat Center Mezz, and the view was perfect. It's good that you mentioned that, Hep, because I would not have known to alert anyone. But when you think about it, you can see how the perspective from Center Mezz would allow you to see all.
One of the boys reminded me very much of a friend who passed away earlier this year. I don't want to mention details because I don't want to ruin anything for Liotte (since she IS going to see it!) But it made the play even more poignant for me.
Thanks for the info guys!
The problem is in the angle at which the desks are placed in the classroom set.
So maybe standing room is the way to go?
Or, Mezz.
How is your French, liotte?
I will see what they have in regards to rush and SRO, perhaps for next weekend since I work extra long hours this week.
I would definitely recommend Mezz, not standing room. There are things going on above the scene on stage, and from the back of the house, you might miss some of it.
From the Mezz, you can see everything perfectly. Hep, you've made me feel so lucky tonight! I think I had positively ideal seats!
The only disappointing thing to me was that a lot of the people around me just didn't understand the play at all. That was kind of sad. But it didn't ruin my thorough enjoyment of the play!
I had an appreciative, play-going audience around me. No knee-jerk standing-o that you get at musicals. There was just sustained applause.
