Who remembers the Auto Pub in the Gulf Western Building?
Who remembers Mama Leone's at the original location (not the one near Phantom)?
Who remembers when Macy's used to have a food hall/fruit and produce section? Who remembers when Macy's had an electronics department? a book department? a record department? when their basement was second hand and funky clothing from the Unique Clothing Warehouse?
Who remembers Alexanders? Gimbels? Korvettes? Woolworths?

Sad to say, I remember them all
There used to be a Howard Johnsons across from the Grand Hyatt (than the Biltmore). There also used to be an Automat in the basement of Macy's . Those were the days
To Grovers : get thee over to Footlight. I saw a record from freedomland featuring songs by Jule Styne & including Johnny Freedom. If it is still there, it can be had for a song
While we are tripping down memory lane here are a few more: The Brass Rail, Zum Zum's & nedicks (which has returned I might add)

Oh - that mention of Woolworth's brought back some happy memories. My high school class made two trips to New York and that wonderful Woolworth's in mid town was where we did all our souvenire shopping. (It had an ENORMOUS selection and was the only place we could afford.) I believe it had a small (though significant) role in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"
I also remember eating at the automat during one of those trips.

Mamie, you made me think of one of my favorite songs...
Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She really made the Woolworth counter shine
Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer
They'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime
Eddie played the steel guitar,
and his mama cried cuz he played in the bars
And kept young Rita out late at night
So they married up in Abilene, lost a child in Tennessee
Still that love survived, 'cause they'd sing
Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime
One of the boys in Eddie's band took a shine to Rita's hands
So Eddie ran off with the bass man's wife
Oh but he was back by June, singin' a different tune
And sportin' miss Rita back by is side. And he sang...
Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime
Eddie traveled with the barroom bands
till arthritis took his hands
Now he sells insurance on the side
Rita's got a house to keep, dimestore novels and a love so sweet
They dance to the radio late at night. And they sing:
Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me, hey it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime
Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She really made the Woolworth counter shine
Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer
And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime...

Posted: 7/2/05 at 12:35amFreedomland was an amusement park, Robbo. Sort of a low-rent 6 Flags for its time. Closed years and years ago, but was great fun. I went when I was a grammar school kid.

Posted: 7/2/05 at 9:19amThanks. I was 15 years old at the time and after that show I had a lot of stars in my eyes. I wasn't sure if I actually saw that or not!
