Who needs Karl Rove when ya got Joe Lieberman?

Call me narrow, or inappropriately hot-headed (and to be sure I certainly find aspects of Dean's candidacy disappointing) ... but I can't bear watching self-righteous Loser Lieberman act as a faux Republican attack dog, inadvertently serving the Rovian strategy more than the Democratic cause. From the Saddam capture onward, Lieberman's "competitive" approach to Dean's ascendency has been, as Paul Krugman suggests, beyond the pale.

What happened to freedom of speech ? Realize Lieberman is still trying to extracate the knife Gore put in his back. He is speaking his mind. I thought that was the idea of debates & political campaigns. He is also fighting for his life in this campaign. What is he supposed to do ? Roll over & play dead. If sniping from his fellow candidates unnerves Dean, how the hell is he going to take the knock down drag out of the 2004 campaign ? Seems Dean has a very thin skin.

Oh come on, Roxy, aren't we way past the freedom of speech card in this debate? Of course--we all know he has the right to say whatever the hell he wants. I'm talking about the real world of political expediency. I have just enough of the 60s left in me to want to see Dems rally against a common enemy, with a reality check about what it's gonna take to beat Bush. It's damn never impossible, I fear, an the fact that Republican strategists are gloating over the internal assault on Dean says enough. But I respect your rights, and of course understand that your POV is very much in sync with that of William Saffire -- stand back and watch the Democratic Party implode. I suppose if I were on the Right, I'd enjoy this spectator sport. But as a firm "Anyone But Bush" zealot, it all disturbs me.

Put yourself in Lieberman's position. He basically prostitued himself re many of his core beliefs so he could be acceptable to Gore & what does Gore do. Gore should have endorsed Lieberman. If not, he is saying he made the wrong choice in 2000 for a VP candidate. The least he could have done is wait a little longer and/or call Lieberman first. Lieberman got it without vaseline so what was he supposed to do . Bend over again & take it like a man. Of any of the Dems, the one I could come closest to supporting would be Lieberman . He is acting with class. What would you do in his position ? Dean is like a little child who, instead of hitting back, he runs to Terry Mc Auliffe ( like his mother ) & tells him to have all the kids stop picking on him. Imagine how Dean would react is subjected to what GWB has been called ( murderer, Hitler etc etc)

Well, we all have our opinions. You have yours & I mine. Maybe Lieberman is too mainstream. If you do not like him, how did you wote for him in 2000? That is, unless you voted for Nader

While I believe they are wrong, I respect your opinions & your right to have them & express them. Hopefully you feel the same towards me.

(OT: I love a good sexual metaphor, but I don't want to picture any of these fellas foolin' 'round. Though ol Wes Clark, sadly in absentia, does strike me as the type many guys would like to hear whispering, "who's your daddy?")

Roxy, of course I respect your opinion. As always, as shared before. I honestly thought we were having a spirited debate, and certainly didn't mean it to turn ad hominium (sp?) I started this, not to get personal, but only hoping we'd get some fat here to chew on and toss back and forth. (You've got your anal sex metaphor, I've got my rabid dog symbolism!)

First off, I loved Lieberman when he was on Alf. Having said that, what was it Jon Stewart said about Liberman? "He's for people who want somebody exactly like George W. Bush but more Jewish."

All this repetition of the line about Dean being thin skinned ... good to see Roxy doing the right wing thing, repeat something enough until everybody believes it to be true. Dean's butch AND smart. Gimme a physician over a C legacy student at Yale any old day of the week.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: who needs karl rove whe

thinking about this, auggie, and being the apt conspiracy theorist that i am, i sense the maings of a plot here. lieberman, gephardt, and kerry, who are doing the most attacking here may think that by heaping the scorn on dean that they can damage him enough that folks will see him as unelectable due specifically to their attacks. as in, "the other candidates have given the republicans too much ammunition to use against dean, it would be sheer folly to nominate him." totally nefarious and completely out of hand, right?

probably totally wrong becuase by doing so they would render themselves un-nominatable due to their attacks and that would leave the party with basically two choices: clark and edwards. clark has been running a stealth campaign that's kept him off the radar screen and somewhat lowered his ability as his views are still so cloudy and in the dark. his platform seems to be, "i'm better than everybody else, and you'll just have to trust me on that." edwards on the other hand, has been in all of the debates, kept his name out there among the rank and file and stayed above the attacks. he's made a few body blows here and there to keep himself relevant and went the extra step of taking himself out of the senate race to run for president. that kind of integrity will resonate in the south.

so, i think it's between edwards and clark. which will present a serious fracture since there's no way dean will play nice if he doesn't get the nomination. i mean if his head doesn't explode, then he'll exact a terrible toll on the democratic party via either a third party cadidacy or a protest vote, or he might start a fist fight on the podium at the convention. better make sure wes clark is next to him, he's trained in hand to hand combat.

wow did that get off the thread or what??

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: who needs karl rove whe

Papa: Compelling ideas, all. If I have one fear about the schism, it's the threat of a third party candidate emerging from this toxic enviornment -- whether someone from left field (Perot or Nader again) or a defanged and pissed Dem. That's spells 4 years more for Bush, and the death knell of the Democratic party landing in the White House for perhaps even longer. (The Hillary True Believers who opine she'll sail into the 2008 slot, and the job itself, are thinking far too simplistically.)

I agree that Clark still has great viability. And as far as the number 2 job goes, no matter what he says, he could be a formidable Cheney foe. Unlike several Dems, he's actually a hard guy for moderate Republicans to actively dislike. That sounds like a ludicrous barometer -- being damned with the faintest of praise -- but in this contentious climate, being un-hatable gives you stature.
