BL - have you always lived in Chicago?
Broadway Legend Joined: 1/14/05
I have been here since 1985, before here, Omaha and Kansas.
never been to the great Midwest, with the exception of Chicago... somehow, I have a feeling that staying at the Drake does not give me a true appreciation of that part of the country!

No, I would say not. WE IS HICKS in Omaha and Kansas, but not really here.
How does the old saying go... you can take the brdlwyr out of Kansas...

It is true - a hick at heart (but actually I am a snob. My sister and I always say about the rest of our family - "It isn't that were snobby, we are just better."
LOL - I've been accused of that by my sister a few times in my life... usually revolves around those play things I like to see...
What do people do in Nebraska anyway? I think I'd feel more like a foreigner in the midwest than I would in Paris.

I grew up in a very small dairy farming community. More cows than people. Our school district encompassed 4 townships. A tiny village south of us combined with us for HS...my graduating class was one of the biggest they'd ever had. 65
The year before was 25 13 guys, 12 girls--half of whom were pregnant, one with her second baby.
I KID YOU NOT.
Most stayed in that area. Families in that county keep intermarrying. There are sets of first and second cousins in almost every class. I had a second cousin in my class.
I KID YOU NOT.
Luckily I went to college and then moved out of state for several years and returned to NY but to a city 2 1/2 hrs from my hometown. I haven't been back there in 15 years.
Now do you understand Beacon just a bit better?

Yes, Beacon I do.
In Kansas we had about 12-15 people in each class. My hometown had a population of 650.
All I can say is WOW! I sometimes think it would be nice to be in the country, but I'm pretty sure my idyllic version of "the country" would never mesh with the reality.

It is lovely to visit...or to retire to...but you if you are going to live there you need the financial resources to have cable/internet and to travel.
Some places are so economically depressed you want to cry. My father taught HS at one of the poorer schools. He had students who lived in homes that literally had dirt floors. It was incredibly sad.

I will list the benefits of growing up in a small town in Kansas:
I'm an urbanite at heart. My mom's from a very small town, and we used to go visit as kids, but could never live there.
My friend is from Omaha... it's a pretty big music town, isn't it?

My sister is here from Omaha and we were just laughing about the incredible expansion. Omaha is a nice town. You can see international stars at the Opera, but it does not cost $165.00/ticket.
Based on that ringing endorsement, BL - I'm selling the house and moving tomorrow!
I was born and raised in suburbia... my sister is the closest thing I know to a hick - she lives in the wilds of North Carolina with her menagerie...
sushi for lunch! Yay... bye...
that boy eats entirely too much bait!

Do you ever go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina?? One of my favorite places!
I was just telling someone how amazing the Outer Banks are... we usually go every other year (went last year with the whole clan - 12 bedroom house on the beach with a pool, a jacuzzi and an elevator - it was heaven)... I LOVE the OB for the pure relaxation of it - where have you stayed?

We stay in Southern Shores out of habit - we usually get one large house and then maybe 2-3 more. I miss it this year!!!!!
We usually stay in Rodanthe - last year we were in Kill Devil Hills, and although it was nice not to have to drive for groceries, it was a little too populated. I'm going to miss it this year as well! But this year we're doing a week closer to home at the Jersey shore.

You should look into Southern Shores, there are no stores along Duck Road and Duck which is right down the road. We stary east of Duck Road
We are not really having any "true" vacation this year. We are going to visit my mother in law and sister in law, etc in Washington which I always enjoy.
Good for you! It's about time you let somebody else play host! Is this Washington State or DC?
