I've been laid off twice and flat out fired once- It happens. You pick yoruself up, brush yourself off and start all over again.

The best "lay off" was a company I'd been with for only a few months. I got a call on my cell phone from the company my comapny car was leased through. They wanted to know where I was so they could repossess the car. I called my boss and he was like "Uh, yeah, we have to talk."

Well, being a Jewish organization was integral to the real reason they wanted to get rid of me (I'm Jewish), and also to the manner in which I finally resolved the situation. My mother's boss was (well, he still is but my mother is dead so she doesn't work for him any more) a very powerful member of the Jewish community, and a major contributor to the organization. I don't know exactly what was said, but I do know he talked at length to the head of the organization (my assumption is "lay off or you won't get another dime from me"), and a few days later they dropped all their appeals and I received my unemployment monies.

But you're right, I probably shouldn't have stated it that way - in the larger scheme of things it doesn't matter. I apologize if I offended anyone.

Only once. From a waitering job.

We'd gotten a new manager and, at first, I thought she was a God send...but after a few weeks I learned she was worse than the first one.

As a waiter we had running sidework (duties you were responsible for throughout the day) and closing sidework (duties you were responsible for after the restaurant had closed).

One day my running and closing sidework were the same. It was a breakfast place and we had this large fridge where we stocked the milks and juices. Well, when I opened the fridge I noticed we had one gallon of skim milk left and three gallons of whole milk. In a breakfast place, that'll be gone in like half an hour. So I went to the back and brought out a case of whole milk and a case of skim. As I was loading them into the fridge my boss came in the back and berated me in front of everyone for doing my closing sidework during the day. I defended myself and she walked away. Needless to say at the end of the day she wrote me up for being rude to her when I was only trying to defend myself.

A few weeks later I woke up one morning feeling absolutely horrible. I could barely lift up my head. So I called the restaurant early and left word that I was sick and couldn't come in.

Later that week I called to get my schedule and was told that I was being let go because when I called out, I left word with an employee and not a manager.

Stupid excuse but I'm so glad I don't work there anymore. I work at a much better restaurant now with much better rules and much better people.

I'm glad this is only a weekend job while I'm in college. I couldn't stand working in the restaurant industry for the rest of my life.

I was fired last October. Not because business was going bad or that I was doing a bad performance. My boss and I just hated each others' guts and we were both miserable. She was nice enough to give me an extra full month's pay.

I was fired once, a long time ago, from a telemarketer (Olan Mills photos). I was upset for about 2 minutes, and then I went to watch my boyfiend play baseball (He figured something was up when I showed up for his game when I was supposed to be at work!)

Not too bad, my co-wrokers there were nice.

One time I was about to get fired from my job at Chilli's. The district manager didnt like me for some reason, and I knew that he was going to fire me at the end of my shift one day, so instead of giving him the satisfaction of having me work the shift, then firing me, I quit and poored my cofee all over his office floor and walked out!!!
I know my coffee pouring was not the most mature thing to do , but it sure felt good!

I was fired, not laid off.

Thank you for your kind words everyone. I spent the day in bed and now I feel ready to face the world. I loved the Jerome Robbins quote PalJoey, you know just the spot! You're right; I cried for a moment and realized how miserable I was there. I'm thinking about going back to school, which is kind of exciting.

I want a CAREER not a job.

When I was at Dun and Bradstreet years ago, I was called in to my manager's office and the two lead guys said "We don't think you like the job-you should leave." So I did. They were right, I hated credit reporting store to store

I was laid off from a big company after the internet crash of 2001. They handled it really well, got a nice severance package, my boss actually threw some work my way because he needed some stuff done a few months later. It was May, the weather was gorgeous, I could afford to live on unemployment, I met my partner, it was one of the best six months of my life.

I got "laid off" from another job about 5 years later. The boss was a loon, plain and simple, he has a reputation for difficulty that is very well deserved, my co-workers congratulated me on my first day at that job for returning from my first lunch hour, as several of my predecessors had not. I temped for about 8 months and found a much better job, better paying and considerably less stress.

We've all been there. You'll be fine.

Bobby, I've found then when a job ends (no matter how) the next one has always been better.

This is really tough now, but it's also an opportunity! You will end up with something much better

I was almost "let go" from the job I'm at now.

We had this situation back in September, with three new people. They apparently decided to smoke pot on the balcony at work, and got caught. Three days later (yea, my bosses were idiots), they escort those three and myself for a random drug test. Except, I don't pee on command well...especially not when nervous, and I couldn't fill the cup.

Next day, I was allowed to go back and re-test, over filled the cup, and saved my job.
