Okay, wow, I didn't see that coming. I figured he wasn't going to be chief of staff anymore, but wow...
Thoughts?

What happened? I haven't watched the show in a while, but I would love to know what happened.

Okay, wow, I'm never good at recaps, but I'll do some basics and someone can fill in more details later. So there's the big peace summit(?) where the Palestinian and Israeli leaders are meeting w/US officials. The president didn't want Leo there because Leo wasn't thinking along the same lines as the president, and he didn't want the other parties to think they weren't fully committed to reaching an agreement. Josh also returns from Germany. So they're all trying to reach an agreement, which somehow includes American troops (I have to watch in a college lounge, so I miss a good deal of dialogue at times.)
Anyway, the incident I was referring to happens when Leo tells the president that he should give up, and that this is turning into his own League of Nations. He says it's going to destroy the pres like the LON destroyed Wilson. Then Bartlet says they can't keep disagreeing like this and then says he'll need Leo's successor's name before he leaves. Leo says he'll get the names, and the president returns to the building for peace talks. Leo takes a walk in the woods and has a heart attack and falls down. The next day, they're all leaving and someone asks where Leo is. Josh or Toby (whichever one didn't ask, i forgot) says he tried to call, but he must have left early. Josh says he'll call Leo, and the last scene is the phone ringing in the woods.
The scenes for next week show the debate over who is going to be the next chief of staff.
Intense.

WHAT??? Why would she do that (reveal it, not become c.o.s.)??? I'm all for it though!
One flippin' amazing show last night! Seems the writers are getting back to where they were a couple of seasons ago.
God I was SO upset. I had seen the previews so I figured he had a heart attack. But leaving him lying in the woods with the cell phone ringing the next morning..well that was creepy. And judging from the previews for next week, he died or is being replaced anyway. I know Alda and Smits are coming into the cast and I anticipate they are trying to wrap up Bartlett's term since they have been going by a traditional term in their timing. I'm guessing if the show stays on the air that someone else (Alda probably) will end up being elected. But if they are writing Leo out this early in the season I'm upset...he was the heart and soul of this show and John Spencer is a fine actor. I hope I'm wrong and that he will still figure into the show somehow until the end of the season.
so if alda is being introduced as a republican challenger and we know that potus is term limited will we be seeing an entirely new west wing? i hated those last episodes of leo going all super hawk, it was out of character for him, but i guess it can be attributed to the fact that he was about to die and people often do weird sh*t right before they die. but that said, i'm putting good money on leo not being dead, but merely incapacitated and unable to perform his duties either temporarily or permamnently.
but the bigger question is, do they plan to elect alan alda's character as a republican president? if not, who's going to run? hoynes? i saw that he's on his way back too. the current vp? oh and
**major spoiler**
**stop now if you don't want to know**
**i totally warned you**

Jimmy Smits is going to be the Democratic candidate.
Thoretically, if the show is to continue past next season (2005-06), the whole cast would be new, since realistically none of Bartlet's staff would stay on for a new administration.
Speaking of Smits - he returns to NYPD BLUE in two weeks as the ghost of Bobby Simone!
Now I have heard something that Josh and Donna would be working on the campaign of the Democratic canidate. Any one know if this is true? PM me if you don't care for spoiler space.
Ahhh..ok I was just coming on here to start a thread like this! Yeah so I'd heard about that spoiler and I'm kind of curious but they can't get rid of Leo! It just seems wrong and I hope it doesn't mess with the dynamic of the group.
Actually, the democratic candidate could be the one they will focus on since Bartlett has served two terms. He couldn't run again anyway
Hoynes, Smits' character and the current VP are all running for pres. in the primaries (at least according to an AP article in the newspaper)
I was so upset when Leo got his heart attack, but I kept thinking "WOW that looks so real." John Spencer is GREAT.
The make up and lighting folks did an amazing job!

Okay, a little off-topic (in an off-topic thread, interesting) but I was just watching the season two episode where Donna tells Josh she left her boyfriend to come work for him after he stopped for a beer on the way to pick her up from the hospital after an accident:
Josh: If you were in the hospital, I wouldn't stop for a beer.
Donna: If you were in the hospital, I wouldn't stop for red lights.
*sigh*
le sigh! That has always been my favorite exchange between them.
OK How many of us are going to cry when they finally get together?

Has Donna fully recovered?
And will Amy be back?
In last nights episode they said she would be flying home in a few days. No idea about Amy.

I've missed this season so far, but didn't Josh kind of get back with Amy last year? And then she disappeared!
Last nights episode was great.
Gotta love CJ!

So, I assume Will is coming back to work for Bartlet, with Donna moving over to the vice prez's office.
Who else here would jump off a cliff for Jeb Bartlet?

I would jump gladly...
Now that ROB LOWE failed in yet another TV show, maybe he'll come home to THE WEST WING?
Martin Sheen for President in 2008!
Who is with me?
