So I have a few conservative Facebook friends. I decided long ago that if they want to post opinions I find repellent ("Michelle Obama looks like a particularly ugly gorilla") (actual post btw) I'd ignore it, but when they post outright lies (or to be charitable, errors) I'd correct them.
Today, the lie of the day is a bizarre photo meme that says "Obama Net worth 2007 $1.2 Million, 2013 $12 MILLION. TREASON PAYS WELL!" Well apart from the fact that that premise makes no sense (someone has paid him millions of dollars to betray the USA?) (Bush I'd believe, but Obama?) I don't think his net worth is that high- he's written some very popular books but the REAL presidential dollars roll in AFTER he leaves office- memoirs, speeches, board of directors.
So I looked it up- sure enough, his assets are abut half that. It's easy to do- the White House releases those numbers annually. Plus he has to publish his tax returns.
So I pointed it out to the folks who'd posted- not questioning how "treason" could be so profitable, jut correcting the error. I mean you could say he "might be" worth $7M, which is a LOT of money. Why exaggerate? To a one, they stuck by the $12M number with no attempt to prove it.
So why would they rather believe a lie than the truth?

Why do people lie? "If you like your health insurance, you can keep your health insurance." Obama lied, people died.

Well Goth that is a great example- he never should have said that. He's said so. He's done all he can to fix the problem. He admitted the mistake, apologized and tried to make it right. That's what my mom always said to do.
But the example I gave was as string of people jut flat out denying the facts when proven wrong. That's a different thing altogether.
