"Beer-sodden fans and rain combined for an ugly finish to a long day of golf yesterday, with Tiger Woods and other golfers subjected to drunken heckling as the action at Bethpage Black came to a close. At 6:42 p.m., dozens of drunken spectators at Hole 10 taunted Woods as he prepared to start his third round in the rain.
"We're on Long Island, baby, where men are men!" one fan yelled. Minutes later, a group of fans greeted Fred Funk at the 10th hole by shouting his last name as an obscenity. "Put that umbrella down!"
On the ninth fairway, drunks called out "you suck" to players...

i'm reminded of robert downey jr's classic observation during the underrated rodney dangerfield vehicle back to school, "you know what you almost never see? somebody heckling a diver."
golfers are pussies. "oh, please be quiet, i have to concentrate really hard." unlike a baseball player who has to concetrate on trying to hit a ball that is actually flying right at him at almost 100 mph while an entire stadium is chanting that he sucks. cry me a river.

This is a sport most commonly known in the US as a hobby for the upper class and the executive men's club. I'm not knocking the sport or its complexity, but COME ON. That's like brawling at equestrian show jumping.

Doesn't this go against nearly every stereotype of people living on Long Island? I thought Long Island was always considered "soft" compared to other places.
And not all sports fans are jerks. I know plenty of perfectly nice ones. You just always had a few rotten apples that spoil the bunch.
It's just that the jerky sports fans are the ones who get the attention because they're loud and obnoxious. Do you ever hear about the fan that formed a bond with a player and they keep in touch even after his retirement? No, writing about the jerky fans is more "news-worthy".

Posted: 6/23/09 at 1:57pmplease have you people never seen tin cup? happy gilmore? golf fans are loons. this stuff happens at every tounrament daly plays in and the pga says nothing because they are just happy someone, anyone is willing to pay to watch this "sport." personaly i think that the writier is a racost for attacking the tiger fans like this. he totally better apologize and go watch barbershop.

i only go to lawnguyland when required to do so by family. and then only if i am asked really nicely and promised some form of opiate.
the only exception to that rule is my damn little neices saying, "uncle, we miss you. come play with us."

it's so rare that i am on the other side of that equation, q. that it wasn't until after i posted that i considered it. but yeah, when mopsy (6) her little sib flopsy (3) or even their big brother sol ( 8 ) want someone to play uno or catch or marbles or wii or bring sweets...they look to uncle round-eye.

But I know this isn't an area you like to joke about, so I really am refraining.
And by-the-by, as much of a fan of golf as I am, I only call it a game. Calling it a sport seems . . . over-reaching, I think.

People DO heckle divers. At least they did when US diver Michele Mitchell was competing in China. The Chinese diver went before her, did well, and the crowd was silent while she executed the dive. Mitchell went up, and the audience started heckling her and banging teacups against the railings. She ignored their attempts to distract her and went on to win the event. The Chinese government was mortified by the audience's behavior and apologized profusely.
Take that, sports jerks.
