Why didn't John Raitt have a film career?

I watched the film version of "The Pajama Game" and the TV version of "Annie Get Your Gun" that he did with Mary Martin, and I just can't help wondering why he didn't have a film career?

He was tall, handsome, built, could sing, and was no worse an actor than Howard Keel.

So, why wasn't he signed up by a studio?

He was under contract at MGM in the early '40s, but they didn't use him much, and then they dropped him. After he landed Curly in the Chicago company of "Oklahoma!" he went straight into "Carousel" on Broadway. Then he did one show after another up to and including "Pajama Game."

He was a theatre guy. Like Alfred Drake, the Lunts, Katharine Cornell, etc. They never did much film work at all, despite being at the top of their game in theatre.

Plus, didn't he have a family in New York? If you're happy in NYC and settled, why pull up stakes for a chance in Hollywood?
