What is the purpose of a singer clasping their fingers together in front of their chest while they sing? Like the kids in The Sound of Music.

Probably because they have no idea what to do with their hands.
Are their hands on their chest? If they are, then it's a way to make sure you are singing from your diaphragm. My director taught me, but you aren't supposed to do it a lot.
i always thought placing my hands on my stomach helped me with my diaphragm- on your chest?? i've never heard of that happening
I meant stomach. Sorry!

No, I mean the hands are cupped. One hand is cupped up and one is cupped down with the fingers clasped together and held in front of the chest.

I've only seen it done as a way of feigning being prim or proper. For instance, my director made me stand like that last week as the maid singing "Miss Otis Regrets."
Does anyone take that stance whilst singing, anymore? It helps the ribcage expand, allowing the lungs to fill to capacity.
