Note: This topic is covered extensively, in rather greater detail (and more heated debate) in the other London attacks thread ("Could it happen here" or something to that effect, started by Dollypop.) Anyone wanting to weigh in, or learn how the vocal posters at this board weighed in today, check out that thread.
After media overload -- all networks showing the same poor British attorney with the bloodied face in an endless loop -- I went to the library and checked Deepok Chopra's new book, PEACE IS THE WAY. It's a wonderfully thought out, hysteria-free thesis by the way, no one's idea of "too easy" or "too simplistic" for our complex world. He argues, persuasively, in favor of responding to that complexity ... with more complex thinking, nothing less.

Something tells me Peace Is The Way ain't gonna cut it with those who did the bombing
Hopefully, when they are caught, we will show them our compassion & how we are all for diversity & tolerence - 2 attributes the bombers are really adherents of

"I remember getting very pissed off after 9/11 when people from other cities would say "We were ALL New Yorkers that day."
I wated to scream at them and say "No, you were the F*CK not! Did you walk through putrid smoke and raining soot? Did you run? Did you smell burning flesh for weeks after? No you were NOT New Yorkers that day. WE were!"
But I didn't. I just said thank you."
PalJoey - you may have kept your thoughts to yourself at that point, but you obviously kept them simmering so that they could boil over in a completely inappropriate manner today.
By your logic, one could NEVER have empathy with the millions slaughtered in the WWII death camps unless they were standing at Auschwitz hearing and smelling the hissing gas. One could NEVER feel solidarity during the attack on Pearl Harbor unless you were vacationing in Honolulu that day.
Not to point out the obvious, but the buildings hit on 9/11 were called the WORLD Trade Center - and one didn't need the soot in the air to stop breathing that day.
I don't suppose I could expect anything different from the poster who took the opportunity while these events were unfolding to make a crack about Rove's troubles.
Your icon may be a picture of 'whatever that forgotten actress' name is' with her arms thrown in the air - but all I see is you with your legs thrown in the air showing your ASS to the world.

That's my hobby. It's still cool to do that, right?

"Oh Ugly Bug..I'm still thinking oil, but I'm a bastard liberal. It is very likely that it will make things better in the war on terror, but right now--it's made things worse."
But I'm a bastard liberal too. :)
And it has made things much worse, stirred the pot of terrorism so to speak.

DGrant, vocation, avocation, vacation, what matters is loving what you do. Oprah says that's key to happiness in life.
Auggie, I'm not surprised that your reference to a book that advocates thinking with nuance (I have to confess not something I generally expect to hear from Deepak) was met with such a non-nuanced response from our resident philosopher, Mr. Roxy.

DGrant--thank you for your post---very eloquent
Well, Ugly Bug, I have to confess that I agree with Maher that just MAYBE Bush has a plan in Iraq. It's prob wishful thinking.

And RobbO, as Madame X stated, there have been other terrorist attacks since September 11.
One year, one month and one day after September 11 were the Bali Bombings, where a nightclub full of tourists was bombed, and as people ran away from the blast a second went off. 202 people were killed, 209 further were seriously injured.
And then there were the Madrid Bombings, the awful attack on the Russian School were 200+ were killed, then plus all the acts of terrorism that haven't been deemed newsworthy.
