He wanted to tattoo people with HIV.
He did other things, but he wanted to tattoo people with HIV.

He also wanted to legalize drugs...
I saw him speak YEARS ago when I was in college--I thought he was quite articulate and entertaining, tattoos notwithstanding.
When he said that about the drugs, people got up and left! I was thrilled...

He said it first in an op-ed in the New York Times in 1986:
"Everyone detected with AIDS should be tattooed in the upper forearm to prevent common needle users, and on the buttocks."
He repeated the idea in 2005:
"Someone, 20 years ago, suggested a discreet tattoo the site of which would alert the prospective partner to the danger of proceeding as had been planned. But the author of the idea was treated as though he had been schooled in Buchenwald, and the idea was not widely considered, but maybe it is up now for reconsideration."

Your comment reminds me of what Bette Davis said when Joan Crawford died:
"You should never say bad things about the dead. You should only say good. Joan Crawford is dead. Good."

His spy novels were very well done, and his sailing memoirs were also nice. He was a gentleman and a scholar.
But he was a vocal and virulent homophobe and, if Gore Vidal can be believed on the subject, a closeted homosexual.

Great story - I'm going to steal that line.

PalJoey--I believe you posted the link to the 2nd part twice.
I only get the joke because I read a Capote bio not too long ago.
You will probably recall reading that Truman Capote put on his Black and White Ball that was THE event of the season. Everybody who Truman that was somebody was invited while some other high rollers were excluded.
A complete account of the party is available at the link below. Several eye witnesses claim that Buckley was drunk as a sailor challenging everyone (mainly women that is) to a fight.

I don't need the link--I've known all about the Black and White Ball since before you were born.
