Posted: 10/3/04 at 8:55pmI am getting wireless internet installed into my Apple Powerbook tomorrow and I was wondering how fast wireless is? Is it as quick, faster, or slower than DSL?

Your laptop will have an optimum speed of 54 Megabytes per second. If you happen to be using a wireless B base station or access point your computer will only operate at 11 Mbps. These are both broadband speeds so don't fret. It is a little bit slower than ethernet but in my opinion not enough to really notice. I have wireless b in my laptop and wireless b router in the cottage here. Airport works at wireless G speeds (Probably basically the same technology as wireless G under the Apple brand) If that helps you any. Wireless A is not really around anymore and wireless B is well on its way out though wireless B will still be compatible with wireless g and airport wireless access points and routers. I hope I haven't confused you too much.

Posted: 10/4/04 at 12:42amIt could have to do with the fact that your school doesn't have enough bandwidth for the demand of the student body Rose. They may not be able to afford it, but since I don't know your school I am only guessing.

Posted: 10/5/04 at 3:12pmI have Linksys, Spider. It varies in terms of speed. Sometimes it's really fast, other days I give up out of frustration because the page won't load. Most of the time it's somewhere in between the two extremes, toward the quicker end of the scale.

Posted: 10/5/04 at 4:08pmMy airport extreme and airport express for my powerbook (using DSL) are as fast as the desktop that shares the connection. Wireless is a good thing.
