Og COURSE you liked the Carousel of Progress, Addie--all those brand new gleaming appliances! "It's a great big beautiful tomorrow / Shining at the end of every day / It's a great big beautiful tomorrow / And tomorrow's just a dream away!"
And I remember those Belgian waffles and making Picturephone calls from the Bell Telephone Pavillion. I also remember Palisades Amusement Park: "Swings all day and after dark! / Ride the coaster , get cool / In the waves in the pool. / You'll have fun! / So come on over!"
We lived over the Throggs Neck Bridge in the Bronx and went about half a dozen times. The second time we went I saw a handsome policeman giving a kid an ice cream cone at the Lost Children Station.
So the third time we went--I was 8 years old--I announced to my parents that I was going to get lost. May father said, "You better not."
Somewhere in Sinclair Dino-Land, I slipped away and told the Sinclair people I was lost. They brought me to the Lost Children Station and the handsome policeman gave me my ice cream cone. When my father found me, he very angry, and told me I had spoiled the day for my mother and sister. My mother was laughing and my sister was annoyed, but the day wasn't spoiled.
I still don't know whether it was the ice cream cone or the handsome policeman I was after. Or both!
