I absolutely adore the third Harry Potter. I think it's so much better than all the others.

I want to marry Remus Lupin.

SO true Blythesword84, I have much respect for Heart of Darkness, Scarlet Letter, and other classics. They have contributed greatly to our literary history. I just would rather not have to read them again.

I'm going to have to try them again over break or something. Right now I'm up to my armpits in boring as heck reading.

And hang on, when did you win the discus?

Most def. The third book is THE BEST of the series as well as the best movie of the group

I find the fourth book to be my absolute favorite.

As for the best movie. i find them all to be fantastically horrible portrayals, but the third is the best movie of the three.

Totally, Priest.
I was disappointed with the portrayal of Remus, though. But it's probably that my expectations were so high, because I'm so partial to him.

I think I'm the only one who didn't like the third movie. I think Cuaron and Kloves totally screwed with the book and put in a lot of stuff that was either pointless or way out of canon, at least in my opinion.

What I liked about it was that is was not sugar coated like the other ones. I mean, it was actually pretty scary and the book was like that too. The third book is the turning point of the series and I think they did it very nicely

Well, there were *some* things I liked. I did like that the tone was a lot darker than the first two, as well it should have been. I also thought the wizarding world felt more magical; definitely a step up from Columbus' overly sterilized world.
What I didn't like was that it felt very rushed and a lot of things weren't very clearly explained (a friend I went with who hadn't read the book was totally lost at the end). Plus, Ron was totally ruined. They gave his best line to Hermione ("If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!") and made him a buffoon, which is what pissed me off the most. (steps off soapbox)

It never amazes me that the acting of Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Daniel Redcliffe gets worse and worse. And worse.

Rupert and Emma were both fasntastic in the first movie. But they gradually ebbed.

And Radcliffe......um, no

Worst book I have EVER read:
"Tess of the D'Urbervilles"

I really hated "Lord of the Flies", too.

I have never been able to get beyond the 10th page of any Jane Austen that I have ever tried to read. I guess they're just not for everyone.
I remember liking "The Giver"... Man, that was a long time ago.
And I am a fan of "Harry Potter"... mostly because I enjoy trying to figure out the literary and mythological allusions.

Right now I'm in the middle of Saint Augustine's "Confessions" for my Colloquium class...
I'm not loving that.

I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

For me it would be a case of Worst Book I Have Ever Attempted To Read, because if I have read a third of the book and I am still not loving it, I stop. Life is just too short.

My general rule is, if I can get past 100 pages, then I'll stick with it. Though it didn' happen for Anne Rice's The Witching Hour. I trudged up to the section where it just becomes dry files and then tossed it. I also read Heart of Darkness as an adult and HATED IT. The other book that qualifies that I tried to finish, but couldn't (because it was a gift) was Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk. Dreadful book. I didn't care what happened to anyone. Either the characters were despicable or pathetic.

Lullaby is not one of Chuck's best, but that's what the characters were supposed to be like.

" I think I'm the only one who didn't like the third movie."

I didnt. The third book was my favorite and I hated how they cut so much out and simplified my favorite parts. I know there was a time constraint, but if they were so pushed for time that they had to switch around parts of the end then maybe the shouldnt have shown the Whomping Willow OVER and OVER again. Plus, McGonagall got the shaft in this one.

If by a quarter of the book I'm not enjoying it, I usually let it go. As far as required reading for a course or whatever, I guess I'm lucky in that I've never hated anything I had to read. I remember Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom" being a battle to get through -- it was like 'migraines in 50-page packages' re: Worst Book You've Ever Read -- but I was very happy I finished it. (And not *because* it was finished -- it turned out to be a marvellous novel).

One book I remember "hating" was "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth. Has anyone read this? It's one long, beautiful journey... But the way it ended was terrible. When I reached the end, I was so pissed off I actually threw the book across the room. =/ Then again, a writer who can make you care so much about their characters... to the point that you're infuriated when you think they make bad choices... I guess you'd have to say he did a good job.

PS - My favorite Harry Potter is the fourth. I can't wait to see it on film. As for the third film, it was much better than the previous two. Of course the book was chopped down for the film. Otherwise, it would be a 6-hour movie. There's only so much they can do.

They're going to have to gut the 4th book of Harry Potter to get the movie to a serviceable running time, too. It shouldn't be TOO difficult to do, as their is a lot of extraneous matter there. As for the 5th book, well, don't get me started......

Third book was my fav HP book--and the movie was an utter disappointment. I think the best film was the second one, although I'd much rather read the books.

Great Expectation is on my top three favorites too, along with Ragtime and Too Kill a Mockingbird.

I forgot about the Scarlet Letter---I was slightly into the book when I first started reading it, and then my mom spoiled the ending, and then the book became a chore. I actually enjoyed Heart of Darkness, but I had an amazing English teacher that year, so she probably helped that.
I think they should make a musical outta Great Expectations! Updated On: 9/10/04 at 12:17 PM

There is an awful concept recording of a musical version of Great Expectations with Darren Day. I don't know if it was ever produced on stage.

It had Darren Day in it, so it was really doomed from the off, wasn't it?

And the movie of Chamber Of Secrets bored me half to death.

Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it, but it was on Oprah's book club list a few years ago. I kept reading the same page over and over again. I tried, but I don't think I was able to get passed page 100.
