Would it be so hard for my boss to be honest??

Sorry, job rant, I just have to get this out. After working part-time for a coffee shoppe over the summer, I had talked to my boss about moving to full-time hours in the fall; explaining my budget and what I would need to work in order to cover the costs of housing and classes. She was very receptive and when I asked if I would be able to get 40 hours in at the coffeeshoppe, she said it would be "no problem." I told her that if 40 hours weren't feasible, that was fine and I could work part-time, I just needed to know. She assured me that she understood my situation, and that my requests would be able to be taken care of. I addressed my concerns (very tactfully and professionally) that over the summer I had been promised more hours than I had requested (20) and which had been promised to me, and that over the fall I was really on a tight budget. She assured me that summer scheduling was a mess and that in the fall it would be much easier to accommodate me.
So, I call in to find out my schedule for this weekend (which JUST got posted today) and I'm working 8 hours this week, 9 hours next week. I expressed my concern with so few hours, and was told that for the next six weeks I probably wouldn't be able to get more than 10-25 hours/week, but after that she was "sure" that I would be able to get in 40 hours/week, that they would "make that work."
I feel like I've been royally screwed over, especially when I'm the employee who arrives on time, works hard, is always pleasant and professional to customers, and has even come in to work when other employees fail to show up. I'm so upset I can't think straight, and getting a new job is not going to pay the bills for the next two-four weeks. I just don't know what to think! Was it too much to ask for that my boss be honest with me?

Posted: 9/1/05 at 6:56pmI'm kinda going through the same thing at my store right now-- got chopped from 43 hrs to 25 for next week. The problem isn't my manager though, he's more than happy to give us what he can, it's the company. They've decided recently that payroll should be calculated not by hours, but by splitting $__ amount per week among the workers. So if you make more, you get screwed in hours, and my boss now has to work like 10-15 hours overtime without pay to make up for it, especially since our budget has just been chopped some. Retail/food services absolutely suck. I'm sorry your boss is stringing you along.
