Alright, my family has been discussing this and we cannot decide where the X came from in the slang for Christmas. Does anyone know?

"Someone please tell me- when the hell did gravity become the enemy? How has an essential force of nature, something that makes it possible for life to even exist on this planet, come to deserve the scorn and hatred of every teenage girl with no head voice?"- Broadway Matt

The same way Xtina is sometimes short for Christina. Like...Chris...criss-cross....x...I don't know that's all I can think of.

there was a movement where people crossed out the "Christ" in Christmas with an X.
That's why I shudder whenever I see Xmas.

I'd be willing to guess that because an X usually is associated with the sound of Cris or Cros... example: Deer Crossing- Deer Xing.. Christina Aguilera- Xtina. Christmas-XMas

Perhaps?

What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.

I always thought it was representitive of the cross on which Christ was crucified. So the X is a substitute for Christ.

PEACE.

I SAID it's from a movement where people crossed out the "Christ" in Christmas to take the Christ out of Christmas!

If one visits the catacombs in Rome, one finds many markings that the early Christians used to represent the name of Christ. One of the most popular was the fish ("I will make you fishers of men"). Another is the "X" or the "+"--both of which represent the cross of Christ. All of these symbols are synonymous with the word "Christ". Hence, "Xmas" is actually a throwback to the ancient symbols for the name of The Messiah.
