I'd be willing to guess that because an X usually is associated with the sound of Cris or Cros... example: Deer Crossing- Deer Xing.. Christina Aguilera- Xtina. Christmas-XMas

Posted: 12/18/04 at 6:56pmIf one visits the catacombs in Rome, one finds many markings that the early Christians used to represent the name of Christ. One of the most popular was the fish ("I will make you fishers of men"). Another is the "X" or the "+"--both of which represent the cross of Christ. All of these symbols are synonymous with the word "Christ". Hence, "Xmas" is actually a throwback to the ancient symbols for the name of The Messiah.
