Xanadu - Can't Stop The Music

What is it about these 2 movies? Critics hated them. They were the essence of disco. ELO & Olivia Newton-John produced one of the greatest soundtracks ever for Xanadu. Valerie Perrine & The Village People partied to a disco beat in Can't Stop The Music. These movies will not go away. I love them. They should be turned into Broadway shows. They would be hits.

Count me in as a Xanadu fan. I have the soundtrack and the DVD. I think that it had really great potential. The *idea* was great and was actually "borrowed" from an old Rita Hayworth flick. I'm a huge Gene Kelly fan so that's definitely a big plus and I also love ON-J.

Can't Stop The Music is another story altogether. I really can't stand that movie.

I think that's the flick that single-handedly ruined Valerie Perrine's career.

re: Xanadu - Can't Stop The Music

I can't remember Can't Stop the Music very well. But I love Xanadu. You know that's where Olivia met her ex husband...

Yes she did. He was a dancer. Matt Lattanzi's his name. You can see him clearly dancing during the "Xanadu" and "All Over The World" sequences. She's older than him isn't she?

Yeah I believe so. He was on a really bad soap here for a while.
Their daughter Chloe released a single over here recently.

Dearest Jim Colyer,

I'm impressed. That's two threads you've started now that vaguely have to do with Musical Theatre, and not that crone Shania Twain.

This is duly noted.

For the record, I am also a Xanadu fan. Long Live Olivia!

Yours Sincerely,

re: Xanadu - Can't Stop The Music

I remember going to see Xanadu it's opening weekend. While the theater was not full, there were a lot of people there. I sat down front and sunk low in my seat to see the screen tower over me. I was enthralled! Truly a cinematic achievement. At the end I stood up and looked around- the theater was empty except for me & my friends. Everyone else had walked out. I don't know at what point people started leaving, but boy did they miss a classic!

As a friend of mine says "Xanadu is the Citizen Kane of roller-disco movies!"

re: Xanadu - Can't Stop The Music

Xanadu is in a class by itself. If John Travola had been cast with Olivia in place of Michael Beck, there might have been more box office appeal. Travolta actually did a second film with Olivia Newton-John, Two of a Kind, but it was a dud. Broadway shows normally are made into movies. Xanadu would reverse the process, a movie becoming a Broadway show. One of the Xanadu sites claims that John Farrar (Olivia's producer) had a stage adaptation ready in 2002. Where is it? Jeff Lynne & ELO saved their best music for Xanadu. I'm Alive & Magic still haunt. The muses in the mural coming alive! Wow! Olivia as Kira! That there is a Xanadu preservation society says something. http://www.geocities.com/xanadupreservation/

Can't Stop The Music may have ruined Valerie Perrine's career or her career may have simply had limits. Valerie was a Las Vegas showgirl having a good time in the post-Vietnam/Watergate era. She was a marginal actress. She had a great body. She showed up in The Electric Horseman with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. The freedom of the disco years is legendary.

re: Xanadu - Can't Stop The Music

Xanadu totally shaped my life as a kid... for one, as a kid who loves musicals in a country where there is no real "musical theater", movies was the only way I could somehow experience a musical. And I loved roller-skating. I actually named my dog Kyra after I saw the movie (not sure about the spelling but that's how we spelled it).

Memories of the Summer of 1980; a kinder and gentler time?

Both films opened in the summer of '80 and tanked. But what a time to reflect on, nostalgically. The last breath of the disco era, before AIDS, Reagan, and the (fill in the blank). I remember seeing CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC at the Zigfield in NY, with about 100 people spread out in its cavernous space, there and the movie played at maximum Dolby levels (remember when "Dolby Sound" was an advertising come-on?) Yes, it was a different time, because people could smoke in the Zigfield balcony. Both movies are curious artificats of a distinctive slice of American culture.

Listen to Valerie's oddly portentious lines in MUSIC, all about how "the 80's are going to be soooo different," you can do and say and feel whatever you want! A sweet night of casual hook-up couldn't yet kill you, the country wasn't so obviously divided, and the big prognostication was that we were entering an era of "live and let live." If only... Who knew that such sentiments would seem so corny and naive?

Memories of the Summer of 1980; a kinder and gentler time?

XANADU is a totally unique film. Made after disco "died", but before MTV changed music forever, it's stuck in a tween-era that is totally undefinable: A roller-boogie-new-wave-punk-big-band musical! Any movie that features Gene Kelly and The Tubes has got something going on. It's so exuberantly unaware of how silly it is, you can't help but get caught up in the fun. You sit there, slack-jawed and giggling at the audacity of it all. Along with "Valley of the Dolls" and "Showgirls",this is one of the most entertaining bad films ever. Livvy's dewy/sinful aura has never been better served on the screen--Britney Spears WISHES she was this hot.
I disagree that Travolta's presence would have made this film a hit...they made a film together in 1983 called "Two Of A Kind", which was just as silly as "Xanadu", but was execrably bad. Besides, I think Michael Beck is kinda hot.
If you have missed Xanadu, I implore you to watch it. It's must viewing!!

They still play Xanadu at Oil Can Harrys on Saturday night. The screens come down; and the song goes on and the dance floor is packed.

XANADU
Performed by Olivia Newton-John and The Electric Light Orchestra

A place where nobody dared to go,
the love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu

And now, open your eyes and see,
what we have made is real
We are in Xanadu

A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star
An everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally

Chorus:
Xanadu, Xanadu, (now we are here) in Xanadu
Xanadu, Xanadu, (now we are here) in Xanadu

Xanadu, your neon lights will shine for you, Xanadu

The love, the echoes of long ago,
you needed the world to know
They are in Xanadu

The dream that came through a million years
That lived on through all the tears, it came to Xanadu

A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star
An everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally

Xanadu, Xanadu, (now we are here) in Xanadu
Xanadu, Xanadu, (now we are here) in Xanadu

Now that I'm here, now that you're near in Xanadu
Now that I'm here, now that you're near in Xanadu

I loved the Xanadu songs, but the movie went SOOOO SLOWLY. I loved that fact that they were muses, and that that man (forgot his name!!) tap danced...
I also love Zanna Don't! Get it? lol..I'm a little pathetic.
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

"and that that man (forgot his name!!) tap danced..."

I think you are referring to Gene Kelly and if this all you know of him, you need to rent Singing In the Rain immediately.

Xanadu really was the bridge between the 70's & the 80's- The clothes, the music, the whole idea that a night club can change your life. I wish the crew behind Taboo had watched it a few hundred times.

And let's not forget the clothes-- there was an extended number where the cast got refitted by that LA store. Was it Fiorucci's? My mind has gone, but it flourished in the early 80's as THE place to go for new wave fashions. Thinking about this film today made me want to go put on a turquouise tuxedo shirt, a zebra print skinny tie and a safari hat. I'm glad I saved all my buttons. Frankie Says Relax!!!
