Rhenquist's replacement doesn't concern me at all. Try as they might, they'd be hard pressed to find someone even MORE ultraconservative than Rhenquist, so the court balance won't shift no matter how right wing his replacement is.

O'Connor's replacement is the troubling one. She was a moderate on certain issues (and good forging consensuses with other members of the moderate wing) and if her replacement is hard right and anti-abortion then there could be serious consequences, especially pertaining to several social issues.

Yes but it means that they get some Bork-like fascist to replace Rehnquist--and we get Alberto "Torture-R-Us" Gonzalez as a "concession to the liberals."

re: YIKES! Now Rehnquist to Retire Friday!

I know that I went into shutdown following the elections last year. I lost heart and to a certain point started ignoring the news. Not typical behavior for me, and I'm ashamed to admit it. But I'd slso be willing to bet that I'm not the only one who reacted in a similar manner. I hope this is a sufficient wake up call and that we collectively mobilize while something can still be done. I know that I'm working hard to bring myself up to speed about the potential nominees and issues.

This is much more threatening to me than 4 more years of Bush was. And *that* was pretty damn frightening.

I'm afraid it's doubly frightening, Iflitifloat, because the nation will be experiencing the two things simultaneously. One as a context for the other (take your pick) is a whammy beyond expectation.

Even as apolitical as I am, would someone explain to me how Dem Nevada senator Harry Reid said Gonzales was not qualified to be Attorney General but is qualified to be a Supreme Court justice ?

One statement contradicts the other. I just read that while breezing through the news section of a local paper & it just struck me as odd

Roxy, I agree it is odd--but I think looking at the context, it makes perfect sense. On a list of potential nominees, one will gladly choose the least of all evils when knowing there won't be any other/better option.

well, no, it makes sense to advocate the LEAST of the evils knowing you can't promote a worthier in your estimate candidate.

If a friend and I are told that our only choices for dinner are tuna fish, peanut butter, and brussel sprouts (all things I hate). I would implore my friend to choose peanut butter as it is the one of those 3 I think I could stomach the most. I don't get to ask for pizza or cheeseburgers or quesadillas.

And truly Gonzales is the Brussel Sprout, Anchovy and Peanut Butter casserole in all this. I can't help but wonder if the Right is "Objecting" to "Torture 'Em Gonzales" just so that liberals and moderates will asy "Hmmmmm, maybe he's not so bad!"

If he's the best we can hope for....ugh I can't even finish the sentence!
