We saw this a few weeks ago. As documentaries go it's probably 2nd tier, but for someone who knew next to nothing about her going into the film it was enjoyable and illuminated a true American trendsetter.
We saw this here in NYC over the summer and really enjoyed it. What struck me as odd, and really quite sad, is that I walked away feeling that it could have been a "mockumentary", in that I didn't know anything about Gertrude Berg (or the show, for that matter) before seeing the film. She was such a pioneer in the field and she just doesn't seem to have the acclaim/notoriety she should. I don't work in television, and perhaps if I did, it would be a different story, but I am a very 40 something year old jewish woman who grew up in NYC and is generally up on the arts and pop culture (and so this kind of story would typically be right up my alley). I feel badly that she and her work have eluded me until now, but I'm glad her story has been preserved and is being shared, even on the small scale of this film.
Too bad the musical of her "Molly" did not last.
