"not really surprised at the looting in N.O. - the city has/had crime stats that most tourists somehow manage to overlook ~"
"the other thing I've noticed in both the reporting and all the video footage being shown is that none of the civilians seem to be helping each other - official agencies seem to be doing all the work. One lady standing in front of her high and dry, but damaged, house bitching for the feds to come to her and a diabetic across town crabbing the same way while their neighbors are driving around in pickup trucks - none of those feel good stories about people helping each other"
"These are some of the people you see just hanging out on their balconies waving at the news helicopters.
the news media more than anything is whipping up hype - they're really not working to objectively collect... "
"appears that Louisiana thought the Feds were going to do everything for them "
"the COUNTRY isn't having this problem. neither are Mississipi or Alabama.... "
"As I wrote in another thread:
hate to say it, but it looks like the real problem is lack of decisive leadership in Louisiana... "

You missed these:
"What is unacceptable is New Orleans' and Louisiana's piss poor disaster preparedness. It's obvious there was no workable plan for a levee breach more or less a major hurricane strike. It's a damned good thing the levee failed when the city was largely evacuated instead of on an average day or night with the area fully populated."
"The military CAN feed, clothe, and take care of a lot of people if the assholes will stop shooting at them."
---
And if I were an authority down there and things were as bad as they appear to be, the minute I found the broadcast media present with all their equipment, including but not limited to the portable power sources, all communication devices, and helicopters videotaping the Coast Guard rescue operations, I'd commandeer everything they have and put it to use in the relief effort.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 1:22pmOh, Yawper. The number of potential First Amendment issues in that idea...it brings tears of pain to my eyes just thinking about it. But here's a funny idea- maybe the government should have its own damn helicopters and communication equipment. Maybe it should be better-prepared to accept offers of help from municipalities in other states, not to mention other countries. Maybe it should do its damn job, in other words.

No, it's not. Neither are property rights. But the feds have to be extremely careful when violating either one. For example, from whom would you take supplies? If you grab MSNBC's stuff but not FOX's, it's pretty easy to fall into charges of bias. And that's just the start.
Seriously, that's not a jar the government wants to open.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 1:45pmif done to aid the relief effort, no true bias were applied in commandeering, and, if possible, reimbursement paid at a later date, no way a bias charge would stick

Posted: 9/2/05 at 1:59pmReimbursement? Why are to talking about earning money from relief to a disaster. There should be no company that is allowed to make money from this disaster. Does anyone think it's crazy that citizens of limited resources are giving their hard earned money to assist in the relief effort and multi-million dollar corporations are making money from the elief effort.
