What are some movies that you thought looked horrible, but after watching it, realized it was actually pretty good or even great?

The Life of David Gale - received a lot of bad reviews. I found this movie extremely thought-provoking.

The 40-Year Old Virgin - much funnier than I thought it would be. One of my favorites.

The Village - Most people I know disliked it but I thought it was quite good.

Signs, also by Shayamalan. Heard it was terrible, and it wasn't at all.

And I agree about the 40 Year Old Virgin. Finally saw it and thought it was very funny.

I also agree with the 40 year old virgin.

And "The Ringer". I expected it to be very disrespectful but found it to be quite the opposite. I love the "When the f*** did we get ice cream?" guy.

I thought the 40 year old virgin was hilarious!

When a Stranger Calls. We rented it a few weeks ago. I was a little skeptical since the box is completely void of blurbs and RottenTomatoes gave it a pretty low score, but, I liked Camilla Belle and it had some scares.

(If you've seen the movie, my boyfriend and I just bought the VTech I5871, the phone that is used throughout the film. It's so pretty!)

I liked it as well, although I think the movie could have been even better. I think a couple of parts were corny and if he had spent a bit more time thinking it through, he could have come up with something more creative.

well this is backwards, i expected wasc to be good, but hated every minute of it. (when a stranger calls, btw)

i did however love the movie, "ed gein"...i thought it would be disgusting and horrible..but was actually fairly pleased.

I thought The Devil's Rejects would be just a boring slasher film but it turned out to be an extremely dark comedy, with a surprising amount of wit.

When I saw the first preview for Austin Powers I actually thought "I have no interest at all in that - it'll be just another SNL type skit extended too long movie." I didn't go see it in the movies but caught it on a free HBO preview one afternoon in college - I couldn't believe how funny it actually was.

I wish more people had thought it was stupid, that way they wouldn't have made 3 of them.

kinda off-topic but...

I assume you mean the remake. I saw the original and it was boring and I wondered why the hell they would remake it. I refuse to see it, especially after ign.com gave it a 0/5.

Yes, at least the original tried to come up with a story about the murderer. From what I understand the remake takes the first 10 minutes of the original and expands it into a full movie.

This review made me laugh so much:

I too was very worried about CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Tim Burton's previous remake of PLANET OF THE APES had been a disaster, and I just couldn't see Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, and I am a big fan of the original film.

I needn't have worried. Burton's version was excellent, except for the stuff about Wonka's father.

I didn't think I'd like Finding Neverland, but knowing that Johnny Depp was it and that it was on IMDB's top 250 list, I decided to give it a chance. It surpassed all of my expectations.
