Does anyone on this board speak/understand Yiddish? I am a Yiddish-speaking teen and would love to converse here with anyone who speaks it or even understands it.

Only tiny bits, I'm afraid. My dad is semi-fluent because that was his parents' first language, so he learned it along with Hebrew as a child.
But if you want obscurity, try finding a Ladino speaker. :P

Love Yiddish-know some here and there! Nice to find another teen who knows Yiddish-I dont speak it, but I know a bunch of slang, etc.
My Yiddish to English translator is unavailable. I'll call my grandmother tomorrow! I wish I knew Yiddish, but I guess Hebrew will have to do!

I went to a Yiddish Sunday School, but can't recall much. They used to make me recite poems in Yiddish, but I can only remember what they were in English, not Yiddish... oh well! It was so long ago. I'm glad that others learned Yiddish though. It's a fascinating language with much history.

If anyone is interested, there is a Yiddish Book Museum in Amherst Massachusetts. It is fabulous! Everything there is dedicated to Yiddish culture. Try to visit if you are in the nieborhood. My Yiddish is not not that great but, I have sung many songs in Yiddish with a Jewish Choir.
I have been to the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst. It is in a gorgeous area. My mom is a Yiddish teacher, so if anyone is interested in learning Yiddish, come to North Carolina! She needs students because unfortunately, there is not much demand for a Yiddish teacher here. I really love Yiddish, and I have a group of Yiddish speaking friends, but they live in NY and Chicago. Learn Yiddish! It ROCKS!

Yiddish is such a fun and colorful language. I am particulary interested in Yiddish music. A few years ago I played clarinet with a local klezmer band called Heavy Schtetl. I sang with them too. My favrite songs were Oyfen Pripitchok. Az der Rebbe Geht and Mandelen mit Roszhinkes. My grandmother used to sing Oyfen Pripitchok to me when I was little. A Gut Shabbes!
it's so cool to see so many ppl talking about yiddish. for me to, only hebrew will have to do except for the classic words and some slang. my grandparents always speak it when they don't want us to understand what they're saying. you know, they offer it at a lot of colleges. i was thinking about taking it b/c it's such a great language but i don't know if i will or not.

If you do a search on this site, you'll find that a while back we were having great fun with the word "plotz". We found that if you substituted it for a word in the title of a Broadway show, you came up with humorous results. I think we titled the thread "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Plotzing".

It was "how to suceed in plotzing without really trying" and it was a great thread. What does plotz mean anyway?

Um...I know flotz means fart. I'm not sure if plotz is the same thing. Yiddish and Hebrew/Sephardi pronunciations get confusing sometimes.

My parents spoke Yiddish. I can understand it but can't speak it very well.
My friend and I had a whole discussion on shmutz and schmaltz. They get so confusing sometimes. It's easier to read than understand, that's for darn sure. I always find it amusing however, to compare Yiddish (transliteration) and German to English. Always interesting for a language geek like me.
As it's been said however, I'll stick to Hebrew. I know it, and it gets me a job at Hebrew School teaching.

I just read the thread with plotz in the show titles. I laughed so hard that I experienced multiple plotzings! However, people forgot Peter Plotz, Plotzelot, The Plotz and I, The Student Plotz, Plotzahoma, Plotzlight Express, Plotz Me In St Louis, The Lion Plotz, Hairplotz. Ok, I have officially become meshugenah typing on these threads. All I need now is a nice yiddishe boychik for a groise schtup! It couldnt hurt. So nu?

Did you know that Shakespeare wrote plays in Yiddish. It is true. Much Ado About Plotzing, The Taming of the Plotz, Macplotz, As You Plotz It, Comedy of Plotzes, King Plotz.
If you are a fan of Yiddish, go buy Mandy Patinkin's 'Mamaloshen' CD. It is packed with old Yiddish songs and is very well done.
My favorite one on that thread was "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Plotz".
"I'm plotzing with anxiety!"

I have Mama Loshen by Mandy Patinkin and I love it. The American song in Yiddish are great. Gott Bentch America idone of my favorites. G-d Bless America.
Alix7272, you should definitely take Yiddish at college. They really need students. My mom was a Yiddish professor at Duke, but they cut the program and she lost her job because there was no interest. If you are interested, do it!
If anyone is interested, there is also a summer program in Yiddish at Columbia that my mom teaches at every summer. People come from all over the world to study there.
Also, one of my favorite Yiddish songs is Margeritkilakh (not sure if that is the right transliteration). It means Daisies. But I love tons of Yiddish songs. It is practically all my mom and dad listen to.
