I also wanted to agree with the legions who disagree with frontrowcentre's comment. I might not be a ALW or WICKED fan now, but I know those shows are some major reasons I became interested in theatre, and I know many people on here would agree.

I may be among the minority, but I've never heard of Spring Aweaking either. Did it get good reviews? The only ones I've seen are for this other great show called Spring Awakening.

"Because... WICKED fans, like ALW fans, are not really interested in theatre as an art form, they just like their specific shows."

I also take offense to this. That is stereotyping.

I think frontrowcentre was simply making the generalzation about how Wicked and ALW are two things that people who don't care or know anything about theatre are fans of. Not that those educated in theatre can't like Wicked or ALW (I happen to appriciate both in their own way)

So basically, if you read it as,

Because... WICKED [only] fans, like ALW [only] fans, are not really interested in theatre as an art form, they just like their specific shows.

Was that it, frontrow?

Naw it's that Wicked and ALW exist to give snobs something to put down. It's an ego thing.

I also take offense to this and other similar sentiments made. I've seen over 40 Broadway shows, as well as countless Off-Broadway and regional shows.

Also, how do people get yelled at for making multiple Wicked threads when just today, there were five Spring Awakening threads on the first page!

It's not so much of the actual show, "Wicked." It's the people that seem to think the show is the next best thing to sliced bread. And they tend to think some of the cast as 'Godesses.'

There are Wicked threads and posts that are mature and "normal"
However, it seems that many of them become:

"OMG I lyke luv Eedenna so frekin mooch and she take picz wit me cuz we are like ya no...frends."

So, to make a long story short, it's not necessarly Wicked itself, it's a lot of the fan base.

First off, I know, I know I suck at spelling and whats worse is that there was a logo for SA in the top left corner whilst I was typing. It doesn't make much sense in my opinon to change it now that so many people have commented on my crappy spelling.

But, let me say this. As a RENThead I have had to deal with so many people who only got into the show because of movie. A lot of the teenyboppers who became fans of Rent through the movie were unhappy once they saw the show. They would notice a lot of the changes and would be pissed that the cast in the movie wasn't in the current show ect. There were even some people who thought that the broadway show was based on the movie. And, I had one conversation with a teenbopper who LOVED the movie who told me that that film made so much money that they should make a second one. I told her that Larson died ten years ago and she didn't believe me.

No one likes the teenyboppers. And They are annoying to deal with. But, It would make sense to be selective bout what you wanna give wicked fans crap about. You could ignore for example a thread that says "Idina Menzel is the second comming of Jesus." But, you can answer a thread that asks "does anyone know bout the cast changes for the tour?"

SweetQintheLights, I completely agree! Still, this doesn't explain why the sudden burst of Spring Awakening threads has not been criticized by certain board members that have commented "Oh, not ANOTHER Wicked thread," or similar sentiments, in the past.

Whenever you are a fan of something and talk about it a LOT you are bound to garner criticsm from other board members. For example, lately I've only had time and effort to post on threads concerning Les Mis, partly because of my fandom of Aaron Lazar, and 2 users who I've never even heard of before pmed me informing me that I should get to know other musicals. You'll always be under judgement with your opinions. I'm gonna steal a quote from another board member because I loved it so much, I forget who it was so step up if it was you. "Opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one."

Anyhoo. My opinion on why you cant talk about spring awakening but not wicked is because
A. Spring awakening is a new show. Wicked is not. The Wicked year is over. No more.
B. There is no Idina Menzel in Spring Awakening. Sorry. re: You can talk bout spring aweaking but not wicked???

As a general note for all of you who are offended by the comment about Wicked fans being fans of only that one show- no one doubts you when you say you like other shows and everyone knows that not every single person who likes Wicked likes only Wicked. The fact of the matter is everyone met SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people who said in a nutshell "Oh em gee. Wicked is like my life because no one understands me more than Elphie. Idina Menzel TOATLLLLLLLLLLLY portrayed my emotions throughout the whole show, you know? Like Broadway is so cool. Do I like Guys and Dolls you ask? Ok...like..what's Guys and Dolls?"
It just turned into this huge thing that people thought because they could understand and relate to a show that means they knew everything about Broadway. I like many more shows than one show and I know I don't know everything about Broadway. Then it became an issue when you said you didn't like *GOD FORBID!!!!* Idina Menzel or Kristin Chenoweth or Michelle Federer. They got personally offended. That's when it's too much.

I think many of you need to ease up on the original poster since they have a valid point. If what I am reading is correct, Wicked fans only care about "Wicked" - well I have seen Wicked 3 rimes and guess what....I have also seen almost every other show on broadway, so isn't that sterotype wrong? People who discuss Wicked are jumped on here, and its really quite unfair since that show has brought a whole new generation of people back to theatre.

Whether you like it or not, Broadway needs Wicked to bring the next generation of so called "rentheads"...the kids that won't go see Drowsy Chaperone or Grey Gardens because they cannot relate. So, before we jump all over this poster and make fun of their spelling (which is so mature), why dont we take into account that they might have a valid point. It shouldn't matter if this show is 3 days or 3 years old, their is a community of people who enjoy it, JUST LOOK AT THE WEEKLY GROSSES.

I made a list of all your faults, it was quite detailed and lengthy too and when I read it through I missed you. Aww, I miss you Sally! (Did you know Gerry was here?? Me no see him. Ahhh!)

Getting back to the point of the thread, thank you everyone for beating me in attacking the poor generalization made against Wicked fans. As pointed out, it's actually served as a "gateway drug" for many theatre fans. And I've said it thousands of times and I'll say it again--I am beyond thrilled that some teenyboppers are fans of Wicked as opposed to N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, like my friends were at that age.

And granted Winston didn't help this point, and I'm honestly not sure how much it occurs these days, but still every once in a while, people will make a comment about "all the Wicked threads." It has been almost 2 years since the board was clogged with Wicked threads. Move on! I think a 2-year grace period is more than enough to make up for the damage done to you all from those rampid, inane Wicked posts re: You can talk bout spring aweaking but not wicked???

It's such an interesting aspect in our society--I'm not faulting anyone for feeling this way, but sometimes people make Wicked out to be as bad as Hot Feet--which is ridiculous! It's certainly not the best show ever, but to degrade it to that crap is uncalled for. In society, if something is extremely popular and praised, we feel inclined to go the other way to think it worse, or diss it, or prove it really bad or something. Again, I'm not criticizing anyone here for doing that, it's just an interesting trend in society.

The thing bout wicked is that I agree in that it may be better to like wicked as a teen as oppose to the boy band craze onf the 90's. But, the group of people whom you meet at a given preformance of wicked is annoying as hell. I am not saying that a wicked fan as an indivudal is like this. I am saying wicked fans in general. for instince, one summer afternoon I was doing the lotto for wicked. I got to talking to this girl while we weere waiting for the names to be called. She was my age and I assumed she knew a lot about theatre ect. But, when I said someting like. In my opinion wicked is a good show but over hyped and my guilty pleasure. She attacked me saying that it had Idina in it and Kristin so it MUST be good.

What bothers me bout wicked fans is that you can't even say something that they would disagree with or they would take it as a personal attack.

And, as wickedrentq said and I agree with. I would rather see kids grow up on wicked then with boy bands. Only cus there is a chance that they would wanna see other shows. God, I hope that is true. All the wicked fans I have run into only wanna see wicked. Thye are convinced that there is no other broadway show that is better than wicked despite the fact that wicked is the only show they have seen.

Whether you like it or not, Broadway needs Wicked

You are absolutely correct there. It is thanks ro shows like Wicked, Lion King, and Mary Poppins, that we get to have shows like Spring Awakening, Caroline or Change, and Urinetown. Those big bloackbusters are, whether we like it or not, keeping Broadway alive.

But still...

Keep the Wicked threads to a minimum. re: You can talk bout spring aweaking but not wicked???

"What bothers me bout wicked fans is that you can't even say something that they would disagree with or they would take it as a personal attack."

What did we say about generalizations?

Look, of course it's bothersome if someone has only seen Wicked and decides it's the best show ever on Broadway and constantly says that. But just tell yourself you know they mean their favorite not best, and it makes perfect sense for the only show they've ever seen on Broadway to be their favorite re: You can talk bout spring aweaking but not wicked???

God forbid, when I first saw Wicked, I might have walked out and said it was the best show I've ever seen...okay, I did. Have I since come a long way and learned of its flaws, etc? Yes. It still is one of my all-time favorites.

And for the record, as my Sondheim class is coming to a close, and I've studied his shows in depth and written papers about the brilliance of all of his scores, etc...I still love Webber! :-P
