Bad news for Britons: adding milk to tea ruins the health benefits of the drink, according to a Germany study.

Posted: 1/10/07 at 9:36amMan. And the whole point of Chai is adding milk. Too bad. I wonder if this applies to non-dairy creamer.

I drink more coffee than tea, but I have a cup or two of green tea with just honey every day. Mainly because I like it. I hate milk in tea except chai...and I just get that as a sort of treat once in a while.
It's not really news, though. I remember buying a book about tea (all sorts from black to herbals) at least five or six years ago that mentioned that milk in tea will really reduce the benefits.

Posted: 1/10/07 at 11:59amThe study didn't include green tea. I don't see why honey would be a bad thing, though. I prefer it without, but sometimes a little sweetness is a good thing.

Same with me. I always wondered if the hot tea curdled the milk, so I always drank mine with a sweetener.

Since when did people drink any tea other than green tea and expect it to affect their health in a positive way?

Posted: 1/10/07 at 1:50pmThe article Craig linked to specifically said that they thought the problem was related to three casein proteins in milk. They somehow neutralize the goodies in the tea. This would mean that non-dairy creamer and honey should be no problem.

I've always drunk my tea "British-style," with milk and sugar, and when I saw this on the news last night, it totally bummed me out.
Now, green tea, camomile, peppermint, etc., I drink just with honey, but I don't think I'll be able to switch my black-tea-drinking style this late in the game. Ah, well.

Since always. While White Tea has the highest level of antioxidants, and Green second, Black Tea has antioxidants, as well. With Black Tea, the key is to repeatedly dunk the tea in the water, while steeping, as opposed to just allowing the tea to sit in the water. The more you dunk, the greater the level of antioxidants released. Whether or not it is in a bag, or loose, makes no difference, as long as you dunk the tea, repeatedly. Of course, you should brew with rapidly boiling water.

non-dairy creamer still contains milk protien, or casein... what makes them able to lable it "non-dairy" is the lack of lactose, which is a milk sugar, not a protein.

Bubble Tea is amazing... though that's not exactly tea. But it's really good. And you drink it with a big straw.

This reminds me of the Woody Allen movie Sleeper when he awakes & is told all the things they warned him about in his time were later found to be safe
I do not drink tea & milk but if I did I would still do it despite this report

Good old-fashioned sweet tea is the way to go.
Also, green tea with ginseng and honey. It's addicting.
