Stockardfan--I feel your pain. I have an 80-lb Airedale--widely alleged to be "King of the Terriers", stocked to the gills with over a hundred years of rat-killing DNA--who is TERRIFIED of mice.
I've got neighbors renovating townhouses on either side of me, so the rodent population is on the move in a BIG way, and I was contemplating adding a cat to our little family, but this NYT article has given me pause. I just wanted something to scare the critters away--I'm not sure I want to house a bloodthirsty omnivore who's going to be decimating the local fauna...

Posted: 1/30/13 at 10:03amMy two cats kill the hell out of their stuffed mice. The kitten is especially gleeful, shredding mice and pulling their insides out. I can only assume they are so fearsome that mice dare not come inside.

That picture reminds me of my sister's birthday party one year. Just imagine a bunch of kindergarten girls chasing after a cat carrying a rabbit. He dropped it right away and the rabbit ran away.
And interestingly enough, declawing your cat might not stop them from getting animals either. My sister did that to one of hers and we ended up keeping it. That cat caught a mouse in the house once. I don't know how she did it.
