Julie Jordan....
Sally and Audra sang me home today.
What a magical production Hytner's 'CAROUSEL' was. Right up there with the Leveaux NINE.
Please write what you loved about the Lincoln Center (or any) CAROUSEL.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Glebb!
I saw Carousel, and don't remember it at all. However, I did have Audra's "Mr. Snow" running through my head all day!

IMO, CAROUSEL is THE quintenssential R&H work.
Lovely score, touching story, gorgeous deMille choreography.
It never fails to move me.
Only debit: The roles of 'Billy' and 'Julie' are VERY demanding vocal roles.
Cast second-rate singers in these parts, and it won't be the same CAROUSEL.

You don't remember that production at all?
I thought it was stunning.
Cool that we both had the same song going on in our heads.

BUT, that film version is fatally flawed in its conception...
But LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Carousel!!!

I LOVE Carousel.
Michael Hayden's Billy is amazing, and his Soliloquy blows me away.
I prefer the London Julie to B'way (at least cast recording-wise).

Picked up the Bway revival album when I was cast as Jigger.
Fisher Stevens was so goddam awful.

Posted: 8/10/05 at 10:40amThe overture to this was STUNNING! As was the overall design aspect for this show. And it was my first Audra show...

I thought new production was wonderful, from the reworking of the Carousel Waltz to the dark way they did the heaven scene. And then there were the hot male dancers who ripped off their shirts during "June is Busting Out All Over". Wow!

re: You're A Queer One#13
Posted: 8/10/05 at 12:21pmI love the final ballet in the film though. But not a great film.

Posted: 8/10/05 at 12:27pmThe 1994 Lincoln Center revival was spellbinding. Did anybody see the London production upon which it was based?

Rod Alexander, the "choreographer" of the film version, blatantly ripped off de Mille's stage choreography.
I believe she had to threaten to go to Court to have 20th Century Fox give her proper credit for the "Louise Ballet"...

Posted: 8/10/05 at 12:35pmThe London production was absolutely wonderful. I decided never to see another production of this show after seeing this one as I knew it would never live up. Jo Riding was spellbinding as Julie and I loved Patricia Routledge as Nettie. Michael Hayden was terrific and the 'Heaven' concept was ingenious. I cannot imagine anyone sitting through those final moments of that production and keeping it together. It was pure magic. I only saw a couple of segments of the Bway Julie's performance and I didn't like her interpretation. I thought she came over really mannered and not a natural performance. That said, I wasn't judging the whole performance, only a couple of numbers.

oh, but who has Barbara Cook singing "Mr. Snow"? I love Audra, but there's something about Cook...

Joanna Riding- i've never heard anything bad about her. I saw her in My Fair Lady... beautiful! She was perfection... i wish she was doing the tour

I also agree that the Heaven scene was interesting and different in this production.
Audra McDonald's Carrie was more shrewish than I had ever seen played before.
The big clock graphic designating the time in the mill was cool as well.
