I feel like the only films I loved this year were THE DEPARTED and CASINO ROYALE.
BORAT and LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN were fun, and HARD CANDY was pretty good. Everything else I saw was pretty bad.
But I haven't been to THE HISTORY BOYS or DREAMGIRLS yet. Maybe tonight.
I'd put Judi Dench and Annette Benning above Mirren, as much as I admire her work in THE QUEEN. But she's overdue for some international recognition, and it's an extraordinary look at someone who seemingly couldn't be filmed.
But Dench is the keeper this year for me. What a character, what a role, what a performance.
I'd award Dench and Ryan Gosling for HALF NELSON. Neither will win anything, however.
DG .. . you didn't like Dreamgirls? Do tell.
I haven't seen too many new movies this year, but here is my list:
1) Dreamgirls
2) Little Miss Sunshine
3) Thank You For Smoking
4) Clerks 2
5) V for Vendetta
6) The Descent
7) The Devil Wears Prada
8.) Inside Man
9) Monster House
Oh, I forgot JONESTOWN, Christ on a crutch that movie got under my skin!

touchme, I haven't seen Flags Of Our Fathers, so can you compare your impressions on that versus your impressions on Iwo Jima? FOOF is definitely on my must-see list after seeing LFIJ.

I haven't seen Iwo Jima yet. I'll be seeing it this weekend. I'll let you know.
Flags of Our Fathers is a remarkable film in that it doesn't ask the viewer to judge war -- it isn't about that. A war film that isn't about the merits of war.
I just re-read your post; I didn't notice that the list you posted was Roeper's - I thought it was yours. Never mind! (Although once you DO see Iwo Jima, I would still be interested in hearing your thoughts!)
Umm.. Pirates 2 wasn't incredible, but I saw two people who have it on their "WORST MOVIES" list. Are you kidding? I found it entertaining at least, if only for Depp's quirkiness and the fast-paced, reasonably witty (if Disney-fied) script. It doesn't even come close to being as bad as:
Eragon
Night at the Museum
RV
Hoot
Poseidon
The Break-Up
Little Man... etc, etc.

Pirates of the Carribean 2 (not incredible but I loved it!)
Borat
Little Miss Sunshine
The Devil Wears Prada
Ricky Bobby
That's all I got for right now. :)
I'm gonna go with what I feel are the best movies, but also throw in two or three that may not have been the best movies, but I enjoyed a lot for what they were.
In no particular order:
1. The Departed
2. The Devil Wears Prada
3. A Prarie Home Companion
4. Thank You for Smoking
5. Casino Royale
6. V for Vendetta
7. Wordplay
8. Superman Returns
9. Scoop
10. Ricky Bobby

I saw LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA the other day and found it remarkable. I've never been a fan of Eastwood's work (unlike, it seems, everyone else), but I think this film is his masterpiece. IMO it's one of the finest anti-war films ever made that ranks with PATHS OF GLORY, GRAND ILLUSION, FULL METAL JACKET and ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.
Okay, so I haven't seen Letters from Iwo Jima yet or Little Children or Half Nelson or The Last King of Scotland (yeah, I'm a little behind), all which I expect will be great, but since the year is almost over, I will post what I've seen:
10. Akeelah and the Bee
9. The Prestige
8. History Boys
7. Flags of our Fathers
6. The Queen
5. The Devil Wears Prada
4. Casino Royale
3. The Pursuit of Happyness
2. Dreamgirls
1. Little Miss Sunshine
