Because that's the way the world works.

I answered this on the other thread, Liam. People are assumed straight, because most of the population IS straight. People make assumptions about more unlikely things than that, all the time.

I've always been under the impression that people do assume that most other people are right handed, unless they are left handed themselves. (I am left handed by the way)
I think that it mostly comes from the fact that the majority of people tend to assume that most other people are like them, especially if they are in the majority.

That's not a very good example...People assume the baby will be right-handed because the majority of the population is right-handed. Also, whether you're a righty or a lefty has to do with the genetics that your parents have. You being straight is more of a personal thing that you come to realize afterwards.

And if you come off as very gay, people will assume that you are. It all depends on how you present yourself that will affect people's primary judgement of you. Not just your sexual orientation, your work ethics, your intelligence, your personality, everything. It doesn't mean it's true, but people can only judge at first what's inside once they look what's outside.

Aigoo, you're wrong about that. Like blue-eyes, righ-handedness and a bald head, your sexuality is genetic, as well. What makes you believe otherwise?

Well, if someone sits down and says, "I'm a lefty," one of two possible things can happen.

A) If said boy is indeed NOT a lefty, his parents will correct him and say he's a righty.
B) If said by IS a lefty, his parents will agree with him because this is, in fact, true.

If someone is out with their parents and tells them they're straight, I assume they would make nothing of it since "being straight" is the generally accepted thing. If someone told their parents that they were gay...there would be another reaction.

Assuming that sexuality is a trait (which I believe it is), it's most likely a recessive one. Like how a family of green-eyed, dark-haired folks can have a blue-eyed, blond-haired child. It just depends on what genes you get.

Look at it this way if you must: There was a time, not long ago, when left handed children were considered "wrong," people would attempt to force them to be right handed. This, thank God, has changed. However people still assume that everyone is right handed.
If you are optimistic you can parallel this to the assumption that all people are straight and someday being gay just won't be a big deal, just something that makes some people special.
I'm not sure that this actually answers the question posed, but oh well.
ETA Well I'm the only left handed person in my family for a couple of generations. Not to mention the fact that I'm blonde and both of my parents have dark brown hair. All you need is that one gene that pops to the surface. Updated On: 6/27/05 at 01:11 PM

What is it that you're trying to get, Liam? Are you trying to understand why someone would "come out" to their parents that they are gay, when people don't "come out" that they are straight? If so, then I sort of agree. I never came out to anyone. It never even occurred to me to do it. Frankly, it isn't anyone's right to know what my sexuality is. But, it is important to a lot of people that people not mistake their sexuality for something it isn't. Since the majority of people are straight, it is a natural assumption for parents, family and friends, to assume that you are straight. Just like them. Even gay people generally assume that others are straight. It's not that complex an issue. Parents assume that their children will grow up to get married and give them grand-children. It is the natural course of things for straight people. Even a gay couple, I believe, would want that for their children.

Because the kid would be different. It's human nature to fear that which is not the same.

People have come to accept that. If you'll refer back to Pocahontas, the settlers were EXTREMELY afraid/hostile towards the Native Americans because they were different. They LOOKED different. Today, we have come to accept most physical differences. Some still may look upon it with contempt. For example, I know many people who still just gape at handicapped citizens. My theory is that being gay will eventually become accepted. (More than it is now, anyway...) It's just that...whether you like it or not, gays are a minority. But there are nearly as many (if not more) people with black hair as there are people with blonde hair. Same with brunettes, redheads, dyed hair...
