Papa I am so glad you brought this up. I had something prepared earlier when I first heard about this and I was going to post it but figured people would just think I was being overly emotional.
I'm an Italian American and maybe that's why I feel slighted by this but I am also someone who lives in Earthquake country and have been through a few scary ones. Putting that aside, when there is a major catastropy anywhere in the world I give what I can because people are suffering.
I just find it outragous that two days after Obama talked about wanting to partner with Europe he gives a measly $50,000 to Italy. Not to mention his speech about how in the past we have been arrogant towards Europe. This pathetic offering seems pretty arrogant to me. I hope Italy tells him to keep the money.
I'm sure that the Italian American community will come up with a good chunk of change to help with this disaster.
If I have offended anyone here I apologize. I just needed to vent.

oh yes, reg. the u.s. initially only pledged $15 million dollars. a mere pittance. that amount that was the subject of a disparaging ny times editorial linked below. i'm sure we will see a similar one deriding the obama administration any day now.
are we stingy?

Posted: 4/6/09 at 7:21pmWhy the hell should you care if you offended anyone? This is the BWW Off-Topic board! Offending is its main purpose! Don't the Obamas wipe their ass with $50,000 every day? How compassionate of him.

Posted: 4/6/09 at 7:34pmPapa, I wasn't intending to directly compare the amounts. This doesn't make any sense to me at all.

I don't know, considering the economic condition of this country, I think I'd be more offended if we pledged 15 million.

You're right I don't think we should pledge $15 million either but I think we could have gone at least two million. After all we just gave $900 million to rebuild Gaza.
