After spending about 8 months away from my mother's mutts (the spaniel and shepard, not the ex-husbands), I'm thinking about adopting a dog. Anyone know of the best place to get one in the City?

Either Bide A Wee ( on East 38 th st) or Humane Society on E 59 or ASPCA .I favor the aspca as it stops an animal from being destroyed.

If you are looking for a mutt and not a pure bred the ASPCA or any other shleter is the best place to go. You save a dog's life and get an pet that has had good medical care and is healthy. Be prepared to bring written permission from your landlord to have a dog. The ASPCA requires that unless you own your home and then you have to show proof of that.

vish, what breed are you looking for? i, for one, am all in favor of greyhound adoption (not the little italian greyhounds, but the retired racers)... they are the sweetest, gentlest dogs, so giving of affection, and low maintenance... they may look large, but when they curl up to sleep, they take up little room... they are also great conversation starters when out for a walk...

my ex- and i had two, and we were part of a special PBS did on greyhounds several years ago... Jacqui Shultz at the ASPCA is a great resource... She helped us with our adoptions, and took the time to spell out the care this breed requires...

Be prepared for some initial expenses. If the dog is not already neutered, that may be required. And all shots must be up-to-date. Food, leashes, toys and treats can be over $100 as an initial expense too.

And don't forget your scooper!

Tommy, I know all too well the costs of owning a dog. I've always grown up in a house with at least two of them. The bonus side of that is that I can call my mother and ask her to send over one of the eighty leashes and dog bowls she has in her house.

I'm vying for a Jack Russell terrier, Joey, or something along those lines where it's small, but not an overgrown subway rat designed to travel via Coach bag.

This is a great site that tells all about every imaginable breed of dog, lets you know which are good in apartments, which ones are barkers (important in an apt building) and all about tehtemprement and the history of the breed.

Check out craigslist's pet area. They list a lot of dogs for adoption everyday.
