ok, since there's a message asking how many men on this board are heterosexual, i think it only fair that we find out the queer representation on this site. i want all of you to post! lets intimidate some straight people! (but seriously don't. they get enough crap from us already. if i were straight i'd be crying from what the gays are blaming me for.)

Ya know what? The homo cadre has been a part of this community for a very long time. We've posted here for months before you dropped in today and we'll post for many months after you're gone. The hetero thread was started because it really did get to be that most of the men here just assumed that the rest of the men were gay too. No desire to scare heteros or piss them off.
Just stop PUSHING so hard on your first day out of the vat (although I admit that coming after me in a thread that had nothing to do with you was a terrif opening salvo!) and maybe you won't come off as yet another short-term annoyance.
oh but dear namo, i am just a short-term annoyance. and i am sorry, i do know that most men on this board are gay, but not all of us are so comfortable with ourselves as you seem to be. i get over-zealous when i'm "in" an atmosphere with more than one gay guy, because i live in Republican-ass Virginia. i'm young, i'm new at this. maybe try to push me in the right direction instead of assuming that i know my place in the world. i'm seventeen years old without a role-model in sight. forgive me if i "push", for that's the only way i know how to react right now. blah, i don't even know why i'm wasting my time replying to you. i promise, no more long comments on topics i "think" i know about. after all, i am new here. i'll be timid. if you need me, i'll be in my hole in the corner.

Here, Innocent... don't ever say I never did anything for you. Scroll down to the Virginia section and do let us know how things have gone in six months' time.

It wasn't random. It was a thoughtful response to your sad little queer from Virginia post.
ah yes. well then, thank you.

Well, I for one find the term "queer" offensive. I think it's meant to denote a negative connotation. But maybe that's just me.
Let's ask the group. Because here, we're nothing if we don't strive to be politically correct. But you know that, don't you now? So how do others here feel about the word "queer" being used to label homosexuals?
I'm fine with it--it's very New York. To me, it implies one who is activist or not involved in the clubby, pretty boy aspects of the gay community.
i'm fine with it too. it is just a more inclusive term - rather than saying gay, bi, lesbian, trans, etc.

I always thought it was derogatory. On the occasion that I'm talking to a gay man about homosexuality, I would never say, "As a queer, do you think.....?" I've never heard that word used before except in a jeering context. I don't think I'd be comfortable saying it.
The difference lies in who is using the term. I suspect it would be perceived as derogatory if used by, say, George Bush in his State of the Union Address. As someone who is straight, I would never refer to someone as queer.
the word, while once derogatory, is now quite common: queer as folk (the british version, never the american one), queer eye for a straight guy, queer duck, etc.
it's funny my sister also thought it was derogatory and asked me if i was "okay" with it. the word does not bother me. i don't call myself a queer, i do prefer gay.
if george bush used queer in any other context than "i will never allow those queers to marry or serve openly in the military..." i would not find it offensive.

THE QUEER EYE FOR THE STRIGHT GUY has given new dignity to the term "queer". If that term puts me in league with those five wonderful and talented fellows, then kindly apply it to me as often as possible.
Just for the record, I am queer and PROUD!!!!!!
