If you type up a workout, you can wet the paper and stick it to a kickboard and keep it at the end of your lane. There are different drills you can do to mix up the workout. Some of my favorites are: instead of swimming regular freestyle all the time, drag your fingertips while swimming for a couple laps, then another one to make sure you are finishing your stroke is called "pop out" where you do a regular freestyle stroke, but end the stroke by your hips and push the water up behind you. These next two are really good too: swim almost completely on your side and kick 3 times, then take a stroke and switch sides (do that for a few laps too) after that you can do the same thing but kick 6 times before taking a stroke.
I hope that helped someone!

What? Papa and I have something in common? *faints*
Usually I swim ALL the time (10 years on swim team), but thanks to eye issues, this summer is the second summer in a row that I am not allowed to swim...and it is my version of hell. I haven't swam since December.
My goal used to be 2 miles three times a week, but I am so out of shape that all I can go is about 600 yards, a few times a week...and just a few years ago I was a distance swimmer! I am not a fan of setting a time goal either, probablybecause I am so used to doing sets, that is what I usually do. Most pools that have a swim team using it at some point have a very large second clock if you want to time sets. Depending on your goal, sometimes doing different lengths works (if you switch between sprinting and a distance pace.
A good beginning I used to do was
1 200
2 100s
4 50s
8 25s.
And, if you like doing different strokes, this isa great way to do it!
And now I am going to go wallow about notbeing able to swim anymore...

go ahead and wallow, catie.
when i think back to going 15-20,000yds a day for weeks at a time and now just laugh when i think of going even 1500yds a day...i weep. then i have another beer. then i weep some more. then i put on another nicotine patch. then more weeping.

our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,

I really miss having the nice, outdoor Olympic size pool. I don't miss the fact that it wasn't heated.
The pool at the gym is ok, but considering it's in the basement of the building, it's difficult to go when the weather is so beautiful. However... there's hardly anyone there, so no lap sharing.

With one minute break between each set
It may not look as bad as yours, but this was all swimmers (distance and sprint) of all strokes. And I was more ambitious than mytimes were, so I was in the back of the fastest lane of swimmers, so I got no break this entire practice other than your one alloted skip (at 7 or higher).
I actually found my workout journalI kept and later that day I did
150 pushups
1000 crunches
100 lunges
and ran 2 miles
Wow...I used to be INSANE. But what makes me more insane is that I miss those days so much.
And I did wallow for a little while earlier.
So papa swam back when all the guys wore Speedos...

yeah, except when we were wearing drag suits. no, not those kind ya pervs!
christ i just looked for a pic and they don't even make the kind we used to use anymore. the drag suits, i mean. now they're like baggy shorts, but the ones we used were freakin' oversuits with big pockets of mesh, god i hated those!
wallowing's ok.

A lap, to me, is down and back. Whether the pool is a 25M, or 100M, it's still down and back.
And I just read the workout sheet, Papa. I did puke a little. There's no way I could do that now.

Posted: 6/29/06 at 7:59amI am soo happy that there's a swimming thread. I was one swim team for 10 years and now I'm swimming for a University team...just started last year. I love swimming. What's everyone's favorite stroke? Mines Backstroke, I used to swim breaststroke all the time but my knee blew out a few years ago because of it so now I can't do it anymore.
#44re: anybody swim laps?
Posted: 6/29/06 at 12:09pmI pretty much only swim freestyle. Though my favorite stroke would be butterfly, even though I never really mastered it.

regarding the crawl stroke (freestyle) ...
i'm used to bending my arm at the elbow and pulling my hand underneath my torso in an "S" pattern. i must have read somewhere years ago that this is good technique. yesterday i tried keeping my arm more stretched out and letting my hand go deeper in the water, more like a paddle. i seemed to get more propulsion this way. any thoughts on this?
i started swimming laps "late" in life and have never had a coach or anyhthing ... just what i've read in books and stuff.

i've always enjoyed BREAST stroke. it's more relaxing to me. although recently i'm really getting into BACK stroke. i don't know if i'm doing it correctly, but i find it VERY relaxing and makes my back feel good
and can't even begin to do FLY ... maybe one day ...
#50re: anybody swim laps?
Posted: 6/29/06 at 4:21pmlike you, ct, I am 'self taught' and have swim for the fun of it. I have no idea if my technique is any good.

hah my eventson swim team were known to by many as the "suicide events"
I was all distance freestyle and butterfly. My usual swim meet went
Medley relay 50 fly
200 free 8 eventns later
100 fly
500 free
free relay (the only sprinting I ever did)
I can't do backstroketosave my life.
And 50 laps in a row is nothing...I would have practices where I had to do a 2000 free style, no breaks, in 30 minutes. Then I got a 3 minute break and did another one.
