Congrats on your new purchase! Hope you LOVE it!!!
I believe that's the HD ToshIba with the built-in DVD player. Should make a great bedroom TV!

so far, we DO love it! it's NOT the one with the DVD player, and we're using it as our primary tv in the living room. it looks like we're going to be able to get pretty good OTA HD signals, even though we're 25 miles out of town. we watched a DVD tonite, and the view is thrilling
we paid a good bit more than we would have paid for the westinghouse, which had a great picture and a great price, but it only had 2 aspect viewing choices. after getting the TOSHIBA, we realize we would NOT have been able to play letterbox DVDs optimally on that set.

Hi, blueroses, cturtle & luscious!
Sorry, I've been entertaining my dad, who is visiting from out of town, so I haven't been around BWW as much lately (and probably won't be for the rest of this week). But I'll be in and out every day a couple of times, I'm sure!
To answer your questions (generally), I should say that I am no expert on what HDTV is the best. There are so many options and variables, and a new one is on the market every week, practically. Obviously prices (and sales prices) will play into your decision, understandably. I have heard all kinds of rumors about certain flaws for certain HD sets, but most of them are just that: rumors, and nothing more. Some say Plasma TVs are on their way out, and that LCD TVs are the future. I wouldn't know. There are an awful lot of Plasma monitors being sold and being produced by manufacturers, so I think they'll be around a long time.
I can only tell you this, to help with an example of why you should take all of these type of comments with a BIG grain of salt: I'm working on both Blu-ray and HD-DVD graphics development right now, and I read articles written everyday that say, "HD-DVD can't do THIS, or Blu-ray won't be able to do THAT," etc. Most of the "facts" they are listing are completely inaccurate, and amount to nothing more than one side trying to "spin" an angle on the other side to get you to buy their product instead. Several times over the course of the past few months, I have read minor truths "spun" into complete fabrications by opposing PR. And I KNOW they are inaccurate facts being thrown about, because I'm actually working "in the trenches" on the products.
I have no idea who will win the war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray. You'll get a different answer every day, depending on what article you read or news story you hear. It's a full-on format war. As far as HD sets, or other hi-def equipment, I would definitely read up on what's out there. Start with consumer evaluation sites, like cnet.com and others. Then you should also go to the stores, and check out the demo sets too. See what physically looks best to you and what fits your lifestyle and your "entertainment needs." Put that together with your consumer research, and you should be able to make a good choice with an HD monitor that's right for you.
Oh, and on a side note: Lucious, yes, you're right about the forthcoming Star Wars releases. I worked on those too. They will be done 4x3 letterboxed, because they are largely taken from the old laser disc masters (back in the days before Anamorphic transfers were ever done for home video). George Lucas has sworn that the original release masters (source material) doesn't exist anymore, because he cut into into it when he made his special edition releases, basically "destroying" the original versions of the films, and any hope we (the people) may have of seeing them in their "pure"form again. That's what they told Fox Home Entertainment, who was VERY disappointed that they wouldn't be new anamorphic transfers of the films, but had no say in the matter. Do the original masters exist? Don't know, but I have my own suspicions.

Oh. I'm 99 percent sure they exist. I think they will be "discovered" in 5-10 years for yet another release of the movies.. :)
Wonderful information in this thread Best12!!
