Hello all!
I'm auditioning for a MT program and on top of a MT song,it requires an a classical song in a foreign lanuage. I have a song, Se Tu M'ami but I'm having a lot of problems with it. I'm really starting to worry about getting in. If MT is my focus, and not opera, then do you think they'll pay more attention to MT song and be a little more leniant when it comes to my classical piece?
Additionally, if anyone has any tips or advice regarding classical repetoir and performance I would really appreciate the help.

I think they just want to see that you can sell a classical piece without getting flustered. Of course your MT pieces are more important for an MT program. Treat your aria like you would any legit piece. Se Tu is a flirtatious song, so keep that in mind and act the sh!t out of it. Make sure you work on it with a teacher and your diction, phrasing, and pitch are correct.
Exactly what problems are you having with it?

I'm mostly having problems with prounciation, but I have a rehearsal track that goes over that. I guess my biggest problem is having confidence in the piece, mostly because it's not something I am familiar with. I'm working on it though.
Thanks for replying!

Hey, I'm a voice major. Word.
So, the most important thing is to listen to someone who is a native italian speaker sing your piece. That being said, I don't necessarily recommend singing Se Tu M'ami because a lot of people will do it. However that being said if you stick with it, like, bwaylv song said, it's really flirtacious. The girl singing it is basically saying "I love you, but I love him and him and him and him...so...."
If you decide to go in another direction, some other good ones are O Del Mio Dolce Ardor or Tu Lo Sai.
You also might have a better time singing in french if that's what you take in school. If you take spanish stick with italian, they're really similar.
Good luck, you'll do great!

I'm planning to be a voice major with an emphasis in opera... here is why they want you to sing an aria or classical piece... They want to see if you have classical training. It is that simple. Anyone with classical training can sing any genre of music. The best thing to do is start training classically. Trust me, it will help you in the long run. I sing opera and that is my major thing, but because I am classically trained, I can belt a C. It may not be much to a belter, but for someone who is trained in opera, it's almost unheard of.
They want to see if you know how to breath correctly and all that jazz.
But, alas, do not fret. Practice makes perfect. For beginners, Se Tu M'ami is difficult. Look at caro mio ben. It is a basic standard for beginning classical singers.
Hope I could help!
