I am auditioning for a production of As You Like It, and while I'm not a Shakespearean actor first, I do think I have a decent chance of getting either Rosalind, Celia, or Phebe. I am a Shakespeare geek, but my extent of knowledge about As You Like it just consists of having read it. I have a good monologue prepared, but I'm a little concerned about reading sides for any of those 3 parts. Does anyone have any good "character" information that I should know and be prepared to convey when I'm reading? I'm most interested in Rosalind obviously....is she sort of like Viola in Twelfth Night? I realize we have the whole girl disugised as a guy thing going on haha
any info would be great.

Rosalind is somewhat similar to Viola, but in my mind Rosalind is a bit more... well, ballsy. Viola seems to shrink more into herself when assaulted (so to speak) by Antonio, and by Olivia's constant advances. Rosalind, in comparison, is more detachedly amused by her situation with Phoebe and always takes the chance to gain control of her situation. To me, it's related to the fact that Viola is essentially forced into and then trapped in her role as a man, while Rosalind disguises herself of her own accord and runs off to have adventures.
But as Ashleydanielle said, Sparknotes is your best friend.

Sparknotes OR a person who just did the show. Such as moi!
I was Phebe! Her monologue..damn, it's crazy. But SO easy to make boring. If you look at her monologue, she changes her mind so much you can basically draw a line down the middle of it and get different thoughts on each side. Our production was in the black box theatre, set up as a cafe and Its a Grind catered...so it was like...a real cafe. And it was like when the characters were in the city, it was high fashion, forest was punk. Hilarious.
Anyways. Rosalind and Ganymede have to be COMPLETELY different. Different voice, different walk (our Rosalind had the best walk ever).
We made Celia the coffee addict, who was incredibly quirky.
These characters are SO specific. Don't be afraid to go crazy! Take tons of risks!
